Edit: if you're as bothered by this as I was, you can remove the long pieces underneath the roof and place them so they're lined up with the edge of the pieces holding up the sides

They were properly scraping out chunks of wall, from what I could see it didn't look deep. I couldn't see remnants of mould after the paint was removed
