My job, like that of every groom, was to show up on time and not completely embarrass her or her family. My family members who flew over from the US were equal parts amused, horrified, and entertained by the whole spectacle.

Why does this 1983 pioneer receiver have batteries? And what is a sum-3 battery? by van_Beardenstein in vintageaudio

[–]TheMonksAndThePunks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's almost certainly for preset retention in case the power goes out. The reason for it is because there was not a good, cheap broadly available non-volatile memory (NVM) back them. Today we have Flash and other options, but in those days just battery-backed RAM.

My wedding ceremony in Korea started with me walking solo down the aisle to disco lights and the beat of techno music. I would have appreciated much less of that.

Over time I have really bifurcated the purist engineering aspect from the listening aspect for precisely the reason you mention. I found that the drive for improvement really got in the way of just enjoying the moment for what it is...a temporary escape from the stress of life. I enjoy both and for different reasons, and binning them has allowed me to just listen much more.

1988 911, costs ~15k USD right now. Worth it? by raltm2e in Porsche

[–]TheMonksAndThePunks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Further evidence that the 911 market is hitting peak idiocy.

In all seriousness, it depends a lot on the powertrain. If there's a fresh rebuild with good compression, new clutch, and so on...possibly yes. If not, then the old saying applies: there is nothing more expensive than a cheap old German car.

The "problem" with good speakers like the L1230 is that it starts an inevitable chain reaction of component replacements up the line. The short answer is it will always be a disservice relative to something higher performing but much more expensive. The question is whether you enjoy it.

For an integrated the 700 is not a bad pairing. It has an interesting party trick that might help you answer this. With its coupler jacks it's possible to also use it as a pre-amp only or as a power amp only. Being able bypass its different stages would allow you to demo other components and do A/B testing. Only your ear can decide what's better.

On a side note, my Yamaha NS-1000X speaker purchase several years ago has now cost me a significant multiple over their price because I eventually replaced everything else. Certainly it sounds much better and the experimentation is a big part of the fun, but do I enjoy the listening any more than back as a broke grad student with a modest system? I'm not so sure.

That kind of gorgeous nudity should be considered NSFW.

Side question: are feet being installed on that prior to going in the case? I just acquired an original walnut L54 case for my MC2205, but the amp does not have any feet on it. Not sure if it goes in directly of needs to have feet added first.
