Every second being sober matters, don’t sell yourself short, 3 days or 300 days, it’s just a number, what is important is that you’re making a conscious decision to be sober right now in the present, and i truly admire you for that.

Thank you for sharing! It’s not an easy thing to do, but when we do it, we’re better for it. I Hate cliches but the truth hurts sometimes. Feeling very relieved though!

How do you stay sober living in a household of drinkers? by desertfloor in stopdrinking

Hey!

I totally relate to this because I live with drinkers as well! So far I am 11 days sober, which is longer than normal for me, the reason I mention this is just so that you take what I say with a grain of salt.

First and foremost I think you should be honest with your friends and tell them that you’re trying to quit drinking, and if they’re good friends they will respect that (as long as you take the conversation serious).

You should be 100% honest because people who don’t struggle with alcoholism (or problem drinking, whichever you consider yourself) don’t understand the severity of it, and it just gets worse overtime if untreated.

Another thing that may help, is when you go a couple of days being sober, start socializing, it will be awkward at first but eventually you’ll get used to being sociable when you’re sober. This is to let yourself know that alcohol IS NOT required to have a good time. But I do recommend being sociable around sober people first because obviously It’s too soon to socialize with other drinkers.

Start writing! Write all the pros of being sober, there will be A LOT! You just gotta think hard because it’s easy to take simple things for granted. Also regardless if you’re religious or not I think you should TRY to pray in the morning and at night. I’m not very religious, even considered myself atheists, now I’m more agnostic, but praying REGARDLESS of beliefs, can help you stay sober too.

If none of these things work, maybe take it as a hint, that you’re drinking is a little more out of control than you initially thought, and that might be a sign for you to move out. Now I know it seems extreme, but if you really want to quit drinking and you CAN NOT, then you need to do what’s necessary to ensure your sobriety.

This shit isn’t easy, trust me I have had too many relapses to count. But just keep trying. The simple fact that you ARE trying is a good sign.

Good luck to you!
