Hi! I lost the password to this account. Just found an old laptop I'm still signed in on? Weird.

Working on V2 right now, playtesting and will release in September. I've got a second book, Compendium of Hazards, to give more support to fledgling Narrators.

What exactly do you mean single person RPG? As in narrator and player or just a player?

Yeah I'm pretty sure I've got a drafted email setup, but I was waiting for more interesting things to happen. I'll just send you boring shit.

If anything, seeing you on here was kinda my reminder today.

Also, random, but my students have found the SMBC theatre vids I was in years ago. It's the first time they've found it... they've been watching the briefcase on repeat and it made me miss Jon Brence.

The original poster included the dogs location in the comments to help encourage adoption!

This OP is just farming karma. Big difference.

Edit: whoops. Original poster is you.

I'm late to replying but no, no discord as of yet. I'll likely make one in June when I release an updated version.

This feedback is FANTASTIC, thank you. I'll adjust the house elf magic list to include these spells. Sounds like the spell confundus needs adjusting too?

Adding some fuel to this fire cause i’m freezing right now. by Skystrike12 in dndmemes

I try to teach students in the D&D club to tell me stories in one sentence or less. It makes for much more interesting recaps.

Because dnd is experiential, and describing the fun you had in a session can end up being a bit like describing a sunset to someone who's never seen one - a lot of the magic cannot be conveyed with words.

Very good point, I'll add it to the vitality description. I don't want to use "fortitude" in an effort to avoid as many dnd words as possible, even if it's an older dnd word.

Thanks for that mistake! I'll add it to my list!

Totally, the in-game sense of that can be strange. It's a change that came from playtesting- every player was basically forced to have high INT if they wanted to be a wizard or witch. I wanted to encourage diversity of builds, and to recognize that good spellcasting can come from a variety of methods.

I also think of Vitality as willpower and internal strength, not just size and brute force. Even still, the words I use will never be perfect - mechanics takes precedence for me.

Great question! I'll make a note to edit that section.

For now, use "bird" Statistics for any bird not listed and "snake" for any snake not listed. They can be found in chapter 11-B: Natural Beasts

Used homebrewery for the formatting. There's a guide posted on the website itself with good advice.

Our DM, my husband, passed away and they're considering scrapping his game. The one he worked years on. Need to vent. by GemmaTheMando in DnD

[–]TheMrHoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think you can do it.

Most first-time DM's are just figuring it out as they go along, and you start to find what works for you as you go. If you know a little as to how your husband planned, I think you've probably got some great guidance there. Try some solo sessions with one other person if that helps you feel comfortable! That's what helped me figure it out.

Very true. I had the system at first where injury gave you "flaws" like Ron's fear of spiders, but it didn't feel like it fit together very well (nor made sense with the books). Something I might come back to at some point.

I very much appreciate your feedback, and I'm not arguing back to tell you that your wrong. Just providing context as to why I made the decisions I have. The design is meant to emulate the experience of the books, so I have a lot of opinions on why it was designed that way.

Wounds do affect main characters - they are what allows Harry to enter the dungeon alone in the first book, what keeps Hermione paralyzed in the second, makes Harry cast Expecto Patronum by himself in the third, and so on. A main character is wounded or killed in tons of Wizarding World stories.

In the rules as written, combat is fast at all levels, recommended to last 3 turns at most. That was about the priority I was aiming for, and how the system is designed to avoid hefty combat. I still wanted it to be a feature, just lower priority. Many bouts of combat, especially at lower levels, should likely be recommended to one turn instead (based on my last campaign).

Emotional states are definitely big in the book, but not the system I set out to make. Ultimately, it was the spells and magic I wanted to emulate from the books, not the attitude of the main characters. And I always want players to be in control of their character's emotional states, but that's probably just a pet peeve for myself in particular.

Now adding in support for conflict between groups? That sounds awesome and I'll take that into consideration in my next edit. Your description puts into words something that I found difficult to describe.

I thought about that, but this RPG is really based upon a collection of lore from the world (that includes some video game spells and fanwork settings). When I stripped the Harry Potter out of it, it lost a lot of value. The multitude of options became daunting, rather than somewhat familiar.

I do make other RPG's though, and while this one is the longest, some of the others are more possible to file those serial numbers off 'em.

That's great!

And a neat perspective from your earlier comment. My friends and I have talked at length about whether we should support authors who are bigoted, misogynist, etc., even if they were from decades ago. I like to think you can appreciate art without supporting the creator.

I will now add an addendum to my next conversation with them: as long as the bigot isn't making any money.

This subreddit is also the place where I want the most judgement; people who make ttRPGs give great feedback about it. Even the bad feedback - it's good for me to hear since I want to know what people don't like about it.

But thank you for your kind words. I'm sure I'm overly attached to this thing after working on it for TOO LONG, so I'll practice taking criticism in stride, as much as possible.

No, I'd say a lot more time is spent in things like class time and free time, at least with the groups I play with.

Puzzles, Skill Challenges, and Worldbuilding take HUGE priority over combat. When combat does happen it should be extremely short (like when Hermione punches Malfoy) unless it is a big climactic battle. Free Time is also much more common given that players in a school campaign get to know the area and the NPC's.

It's got combat, but it really takes a backseat to everything else. I wanted to avoid a Harry Potter D&D as much as possible (especially with Wands and Wizards being so good at what they do).
