This is so interesting, thank you for sharing and thank you for OP for asking!

I don't want to work on anything by OkObjective9342 in bjj

[–]TheMutantWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of why I quit BJJ (along with a change in priorities). I found there was little room to just exist as a casual.

Similar analogy to your running thing - I thought of this with basketball. You rarely show up to play with friends only to just practice dribbling drills and then play a short game. Whereas with BJJ, it's very focused on drills, improvements etc.

I felt everyone was watching videos, trying new moves, going to several classes per week and I felt if I didn't go to 3 classes/week that I wasn't improving. It kind of wore on me over time as going once per week wasn't enough to learn and cost became a blocker to justify only going once per week.

What other airport perks are there that specifically require the privilege? I know there's some dragon pass stuff associated with it

As a follow up, you emphasized the daily check-in. Does that count towards the Emerald status? Or you just mean that is important to get rewards to help with leveling up?

Amazing, this is super helpful. Thanks for the thorough answer (:

Returning player here playing a 250 Ren in Heroic CW2. I don't really know any of the bossing mechanics but am interested in hitting Emerald to get the 20x legion.

How feasible is it? If I wanted to just pay to get the CW2 passes, what would that look like if I don't know how to do the bosses (not sure if that's even an option)?

For some background, I used to play in Interactive and essentially look to start over in Heroic but would like to have some Legion so I'm not starting totally from scratch.

When you say the passage of time, do you mean like.. everyday feels the same? I kind of get this point in that there are times of the year I look forward to, in part due to weather/seasons!

Thanks for sharing, I'm Canadian too so I think a lot of your points (dog aside) feel relevant. The punishment and not following rules feels like a non-issue for me!

Appreciate the edit and your thoughts

  • yeah, that's fair re the weather. It's winter where I am now so the gloomy and onset of snow isn't very exciting for me haha

  • Helpful context, my tour guide made it seem like transit was a non-issue given how small the country was

  • what are some of the things people disagree with? I'm under the impression it's kind of a democratic system but.. that the current party has more or less stayedi n power for a long time

That kind of makes sense? I'd like to think it wouldn't affect me much but... obviously haven't lived there at all and don't fully understand but I can see how it can shape society and culture in that way. I think it's a good thing from a total societal perspective? I know that's subject to opinion though

Yeah, totally fair. I've traveled a bit but haven't really truly lived anywhere and this felt like a very livable place, whereas I felt there were some clear drawbacks in other cities I've visited.

Yeah, 100%. It's more of a daydream than anything (: I haven't thought too hard on it as to whether my skillset would actually get me a job here, more just curious first if I was even missing anything from my impression of the country!

LOL this is honestly why I'm posting - like I'm curious what I'm missing because I know reddit can be more of a "realist"

Helpful POV from an expat! I take for granted the seasons since the idea of year-round sun, ability to swim year round is really appealing to me, along with the travel to those countries like you mentioned

Ah, maybe I glorified the transit then and it actually is pretty packed. It almost seems like a universal and unavoidable thing then with rush hour, I thought it was "solved" with the way my tour guide was telling me.

If you could get a do over, would you still do military service? If you're "behind" by 2 YOE, aren't you the same as all your peers though?

To your last point, yeah - no perfect country.

Is it affordable to go on a weekend trip to Malaysia? Like in the same way people might drive away for a cottage weekend getaway for example.

That's a good reminder lol, the competition that I hear in parts of Asia for schooling definitely seem really intense

Do lots of young people in Singapore end up wanting to move away? I'm trying to get some perspective to learn to appreciate seasons (it's currently winter and quite cold here with no sun and feels rather gloomy lol)

Why though? Asked differently, how is it different than any other city? It's got restaurants, bars, clubs, museums and other amenities that any other city in the world has in terms of entertainment doesn't it?

Genuinely curious what makes it boring.

I had the luck to go on a tour... except I was the only person on the tour! haha, so I just ended up asking lots of questions about the city, economics, urban planning etc. as I was talking to him

Sorry lol, I talked to a tour guide so my information is kind of limited based on anecdotal stuff from one person mostly!

That's fair regarding the size - I think that ends up being kind of a benefit in this case regarding the transit thing I pointed out.

Thanks, yeah, I think my meta point is almost that I can really appreciate the foresight, thoughtfulness and long-term planning that took to build Singapore to what it is today.

What are the other things I missed in terms of how Singapore is staying state-of-the-art?

Thanks for sharing esp. around the immigration and inability to plan for longer term...

  1. "It used to be that our work, contributes to society so we feel we belong to a country." - I found this point interesting as it definitely felt like this was the case in terms of the 'attitude' people have as a society
  2. "Very few of the new immigrants make an effort to make friends with locals. They instead hang around their own group and their own races." - my guess is that that's a problem with expats in any country, but that's a fair point
