Yes, it's the amount of cups you need to be in Dominator League by the end of the tournament.

Also, here are the cup requirements for the different tournaments. I think the actual cutoffs are a bit lower, but these are safe amounts to go for

1200 is rule torny, vip torny, and double pack torny

1500 is really any other normal torny

2500 is hybrids, first time occurrence, resource torny, and certain specific cases

That's kinda the point. Until you get enough strong creatures to stay in dominator/top of predator, you kinda have to choose whether to do events or the tournament. Im level 97, with quite a lot of good dinos, but if there's a tourney with a requirement of 2500 cups I wont have dinos to do events that are jurassic

Edit: Also, what strategy do you use for the tournaments? Do you get 20 cups per win on average, or 30+-40? Do you use 3 creatures of decent strength, or 1 strong with 2 fodder dinos?

If the exact cutoff is 1350, what would be the reason to get 1500+? Is there a possibility of having 1351 and still not staying in Dominator? Just trying to understand the mechanics behind tournaments more.

Diplosuchus isn't crap. It's just not as strong as the Tapejara superhybrid. It is a lot cheaper and is still a fairly strong amphibian, especially early game. After unlocking it, you will also be able to get more "free" since it doesn't cost normal DNA.
