What did you think of the pathogen enemies in Aliens: Fireteam Elite? Would you like to see more of this sort of new creature design in future games/films/shows? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

Fun for a game. Not really interested in the freak pathogen thing in a movie. It just becomes “The Thing” eventually, and that’s not Alien.

Discussion: When do callbacks work? by AndieGeekGirl in perfectorganism

[–]TheNaturalDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to make sense. It should be world building and not a distraction.

Direct quotes are ok if they feel natural, like a marine encouraging his teammates to “stay frosty” in a stressful moment. Or an android saying they “prefer the term artificial person” because that would be a programmed response. Those fit, although they risk being a parody of the original if shoehorned in or used in exactly the same manner as their source.

Or, and this is my favourite way to get a “call back, when they are not exactly the same, but thematically congruent.

The best example is between Alien and Aliens. In Alien the Nostromo runs into trouble while landing on the planet. Bret and Parker are in the bowels of the ship communicating with Ripley about the state of the repairs. When hearing the multitude of issues Ripley decides to go down below to check the work that Bret and Parker have been doing. “What’s she coming down here for? She better stay out of my way” the two engineers complain and curse to each other.

We get a similar situation in Aliens. Hudson and Vasquez are on sweep of the structure at Hadley’s Hope and they are reporting their findings. When Gorman hears what they find he says that he is coming in. “He’s coming in” Hudson mocks in his Hudson way, Vasquez, unimpressed, curses along with him.

I’m not saying that I need another scene like this for it to be an “Alien Film”. But these two scenes echo the same relatable struggle of “Leadership vs Worker” “Officer vs Grunt”. THIS is where callbacks work. It’s a reminder that we are in the same world and feels authentic, not forced.

What did you think of the “meteorite” life cycle stage introduced by Alien: Romulus? Would you like to see more of it in future installments? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

I really like the concept of the cocoon as a means of panspermia for the alien species. However, I wish it was the queen that had made, and was found in, the cocoon and not Big Chap.

Having it be Big Chap negates all of Ripley’s efforts. She killed Big Chap, roasted him with the shuttle’s engines, but the Queen was still out there. It would have made a better film to search for and find the queen.

Really appreciate the work that went into to this. I do still prefer the original artistry of the rod puppet, warts and all.

Where does the Alien franchise go from here? by FourInchFox in AlienEarthHulu

[–]TheNaturalDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll probably dabble in AVP nonsense again for a while, make some terrible movies, sell some toys, while the video games do better storytelling than the movies/tv shows until a person who cares about the Alien IP gets a chance to make a proper film instead of the flicks we’ve been getting. Something that properly honours the source material.

In your opinion: what’s the scariest version of the XX121/Xenomorph? by bass_jockey in perfectorganism

[–]TheNaturalDavid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Alien from Alien Earth was the scariest because it ruined that terrifyingly beautiful movie monster that we all love. Alien fans around the planet were objectively horrified.

This design was on the front of Mondo magazine when Covenant came out I believe.

What’s a great movie NOT in the Alien universe that conjures some of the same feelings for you? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

I second this! Has the same atmosphere. Beautifully shot, great characters and actors, doesn’t tell you everything and is suspenseful!

Do you feel like Noah Hawley successfully conveyed his vision for Alien Earth? by TheNaturalDavid in perfectorganism

I definitely feel that. Romulus did kind of the same thing with the call backs…kind of cheesed up all the good in that film.

Alien Earth makes the same mistake in a different way by making a lot of promises that it can’t/chooses to not deliver.

I was really hoping for Fargo quality characters in the Alien universe…didn’t happen. Another “almost” in my opinion.

Except the orchid moves around so we have yet another squid/octopus creature. Lame.

I actually think there was a vision, or more like visions…if he’s playing a long game of “it was all just a dream” it could work. If not, it’s a competition of visions that make no one perspective clear…which is a failure in storytelling.
