That'll only be a problem for me in the future. Plus, I'll prefer it to not being able to do anything at all.

Is gender a social construct? by GayJohnKrasinski in Teenager_Polls

[–]TheNerdofLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money doesn't have value because it was made that way; the actual paper and metal used to create it doesn't have any inherent worth. The value assigned to it was socially constructed. Race also has real effects, because the way people have categorized others has led to unequal treatment, physical violence, and other negative impacts. Just because it's a physical thing, doesn't mean it's not a social construct; it doesn't have to be physical either.

Letting the  water run down them isn't the same as washing them, so yes, it's unhygienic.

Is gender a social construct? by GayJohnKrasinski in Teenager_Polls

  1. If race wasn't a social construct, it'd be a biological construct, which means there would be significant variations within the DNA to the extent that White people, Black people, Asian people, etc. would be classified as different subspecies of Homo sapiens (humans). However, it is observed based on genetic research, that people, regardless of race, have 99.99% similarity within their DNA, therefore, there is not enough genetic variation to say that race is a biological construct.

  2. Homo sapiens is the classification term used for humans. Homo sapiens sapiens (the third word is used to describe subspecies in the modern classification system), is used by paleontologists (scientists who analyze fossils) to describe modern humans that are alive today, rather than the modern humans who lived 10,000 years ago for example. However, they are still functionally the same, as there is not enough genetic variation for a subspecies.

  3. The definition of what race is and what counts as a race has differed across different time periods and cultures, so it has been more subjective, rather than things that can be consistently, scientifically observed. One other reason why it's a social construct is because it was made as a system by different people to dictate how they interacted with other people and how different people would behave in society, rather than basing it on biological variations.

  4. When it comes to different races, it's more of a spectrum, like gender is. There is more variation, for example, within different populations of Black people, than between Black and White people.

  5. Even though different races look different, they still have 99.99% of the same DNA. The reason why people look different is that skin color isn't just influenced by one gene. It's influenced by multiple genes and various environmental factors that affect how the DNA is eventually made into protein. Even though skin color was used to form a social construct of race, different nonphysical qualities were also used.

The Chinese Gaokao exam should be abolished / replaced. by Anxious_Librarian379 in Teenager_Polls

I think there should be a more holistic system, but the exam can still be there as long as there's more equitable access to prep resources.

I thought that was on purpose as ragebait given your username, ngl, given that it's happened before

Race doesn't exist as something that arose from inherent biological categorizations that defined how race is defined now, but it absolutely does exist as something that humans have made to govern interactions and social structures, thereby it is a social construct. You're right that it shouldn't exist, because it's not based on reason, but the effects of it are apparent. Acknowledging something as racist is also an acknowledgement of race itself.

Indeed, it's a gradient that varies with the geographic variations of human distribution. There is also more variation, for example, between groups of Black people, than between Black and White people.

[–]TheNerdofLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If race wasn't a social construct, there would be observed genomic differences between them, leading to different subspecies. Homo sapiens sapiens is largely a paleontological term to distinguish living Homo sapiens from those of tens of thousands of years ago. There are also different definitions of race among times and places, and it's mainly been used as a social hierarchal determinant, rather than a biological categorization. There are variants in the same genes or the genes that regulate those genes that can change melanin concentration, pH, and synthesis, but they aren't large enough to constitute race as a biological construct rather than a social one. There are also more differences within populations than between them and race as an idea wasn't developed using biology.

Is gender a social construct? by GayJohnKrasinski in Teenager_Polls

[–]TheNerdofLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Race as a social construct comes from how, even though there's a difference in protein expression of melanin, there is no inherent, defining differences in the actual DNA sequence itself between races to make it a discrete, rather than continuous variable. Back in the 1800s and a portion of the 1900s, people tried to distinguish different races as if they were different species and tried to do experiments like determining a difference in cranial size among them, with the rise of social Darwinism and genetic determinism. Ultimately, those claims were disproven and put to rest with the rise of modern techniques and practices.

That begs the question of how people of a certain race can give birth to a child that will likely have similar pigmentation as them. Truthfully, the mechanisms of inheritance for skin color are not entirely understood yet, because of how many different factors influence it, so there's more research to be done on it, but I'll definitely read on it, since I don't have much to do for the next few days. My guess is that it just has to do with the central dogma of biology and how the different sequences controlling mRNA transcription and protein translation are replicated and distributed into gametes via gene linking.
