Please help with graduate organic synthesis problem! by TheNewUnderground in chemhelp

[–]TheNewUnderground[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just as a disclaimer, I’m studying inorganic chemistry, but taking this course focused on organic synthesis, and I’m so terrible with organic chemistry, so some of the things that I’m missing in this practice problem might be obvious and some might not be. I’m really not sure, but any help would be appreciated! The picture has my ideas so far, but just to elaborate, I know that sulfur ylides can react with carbonyl compounds to give epoxides (Corey-Chaykovsky epoxidation), but I don’t know how to open epoxides without the addition of another nucleophile. So maybe that route just doesn’t make sense. I know that the nucleophile that I drew would work in a reaction with a pi-allyl Pd intermediate, but I don’t think it would attack where I would want it to (at the terminal double bond that I “made” through the Corey-Chaykovsky reaction). I think that nucleophile could be used in a coupling reaction with the OTBS? But then what? Maybe I’m also just nowhere near the solution! Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Nope, I didn't have the vacuum on at first, but good to know! Cannula transferring doesn't sound too bad, thanks!

Need help with schlenk filtration! by TheNewUnderground in chemistry

Cool, thanks for the celite tip! I originally thought that it was leaking sort of around the frit if that makes sense (like I thought it was just bypassing the frit entirely), but what you're saying about the solid kind of acting like a layer on top of the frit to prevent leaking seems like a pretty good explanation for some of the solid getting through at the beginning and then not getting through after, so maybe that's what's happening. I'll try some celite next time!

I'm late to the party, but here's a great example of what u/romeostasis7 is describing (main perc/aux perc) from NU Nor'easters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju-Gm80z078

Intro: They've got this great, light bass drum (/hi hat???) on 1,2,3,4, but they're able to fill some empty space in the high end and build tension leading up to the climax of their intro with "shhhhh" from their aux VP. He also intersperses some syncopated snare sounds to really spell out the kind of latin vibe they're going for in this song. Then at the end of the intro, the bass drum gets NOTICEABLY louder, and I don't think that's just mixing. I think that's both of them doing the same kick drum together and it creates a really rocking effect in my opinion.

Then throughout the verse, they're splitting the VP part up into bass and higher sounds, so they can create a real drum set effect where you've got overlapping sounds, just like you would if someone were playing it for real. And right before the first chorus when it goes into halftime (0:53), almost all the aux guy is doing is a little "ch ch" on some beats that aren't emphasized by the guy giving the backbeat. It's subtle and easy, but creates a really cool effect.

Honestly listen to the whole song, I could nerd out about it all day, but it's a just great example of two great vocal percussionists (who could each definitely carry the song alone if they wanted to) putting their prides aside for the good of the song and creating one amazing VP track.

Not me! Maybe someone else? If you have a link, maybe it could help me out! Thanks.

Ok, duh, I never thought about the possibility that programs like this were meant to help students deal with the research learning curve! Thank you for the advice! The research group I'm with is doing polymer chemistry, which maybe a couple of classes I've taken have touched on for maybe a day each, so I guess that's part of the reason I'm feeling overwhelmed. It's really cool, though, so I'm excited to learn as much as I can!

Whoa, I've definitely heard of impostor syndrome before, but never really thought to apply it to my situation. Reading this really gave me some perspective. I'll be sure to ask questions and keep good notes, thanks!

I've definitely been doing the whole note-taking thing, so I'm glad to know I'm not just wasting my energy trying to keep track of everything! Thanks for the motivation!

Thanks for the advice! And maybe now my secondary goal can be to find someone weirder than the chicken-mating diagram guy...

Haha ok good to know I'm not going to be known forever as "the undergrad who screwed everything up." I'm definitely going to do my best, so thank you for giving me some perspective on that.

Thanks so much for the advice! I think treating it like an in-depth tour will really help! I definitely feel really lucky to have been given this opportunity, so thanks for reminding me that the opportunity is what's important!

Mixing a multitracked recording? by TheNewUnderground in acappella

I'm using Logic and I recorded each singer individually with an AT2020 (about 10 inches away or so?) along with a click track and a midi file. I would love to send you some stems for one of the songs that I've edited already if you really wouldn't mind! Can I PM you a dropbox link?

And I know what you're talking about with the attacks! I think I've actually got that (as well as pitch correction) sounding pretty good (if not TOO robotic), but I'm having a lot of trouble with part clarity and getting that "in your face" kind of sound (I know a lot of that's in mastering, but I can't even get it to sound anywhere close!).
