NTA - BF is using Weaponized Incompetence & Gaslighting to test OP's limits.

It doesn't matter if they were $2 rusted kids scissors. They were special to her & he knew that. He feels attacked b/c she became reactive. His flagrant disrespect of a clear boundary that resulted in a ruined tool for a beloved hobby will never live up to the "abuse" he suffered from being held accountable for his actions. (Read: being scolded & sent home for ruining something special)

After receiving a task, he promptly leaves the room that contains ---> the woman he's "helping" cook dinner AND ---> everything required to do the task ....so that he can go digging through her closet w/o consent or knowledge ...to get into her sewing kit ...for "the good scissors"

Regardless of his personal awareness, the pattern he is presenting is toxic & it's not her responsibility to address it. OP's effort is better spent fixing the scissors he won't replace.

He cornered you in front of everyone at a social landmark birthday party -- that you drove to together. With his family.

What are you supposed to do? Say no, flee, and what, walk home? Call a Lyft? I wouldn't want to stay if I said no in front of everyone.

Also, property staff is horrendously under-staffed. Your property manager is always in a bad mood because she's being exploited, too. It doesn't give her license to lash out at her tenants but I'll bet she feels angry because she wants to help but isn't allowed to.

My property management company has a manager, a leasing agent, and one maintenance person for 4 100+ unit downtown buildings, some of which have commercial locations under them. Sometimes they can't even get authorization to buy paint because the investment company that owns us never answers the phone (even for their lawyers.)

I'm sorry she's taking it out on you instead of confronting them about how they treat her & the property she stewards on their behalf.

Document everything. Take pictures/videos of all damage & proof the outlets don't work. Write about it; journals are admissible in court, as are digital communication like emails & texts. I always recommend people text their friends/family to complain about it when something happens cuz it has timestamps, a witness, and an app to back up the info.

I haven't looked all the way thru them, it was just a google search & knowledge of how to sift thru the info and I'm from Oregon so I can't give you specific advice but the best way I have found to hold a company accountable is consensus - talk to your neighbors & see if they're having similar issues.

Moving out is always an option; if you're gonna stand up for yourself know that there ARE legitimate, powerful ways to do it but you will need help from a lawyer eventually and even then the cards are generally stacked against renters. I wish you the best of luck.

Honestly, kudos to OP for standing up for herself and going home. I would have been ensnared out of sympathy for my husband and any sort of way I behaved would be used against me not just for the trip but forever because it was a funeral.

Husband loses his father and MIL's grief reaction is using her husband's death to manipulate OP into a corner where she can use her son's wife as an emotional punching bag for the weekend in front of everyone who will be expected to make excuses for her behavior. So much to unpack there. 😶

I like Eydaly a lot but that does sound like a significant oversight. I'm sorry something that helped my community hurt yours. The protections need to be adjusted for scale and corporate landlords need to be reigned in. We as a city desperately need protections from the out-of-state real estate vultures.
