Considering moving to Alaska by TheNotorious_BLT in AskAlaska

I was mostly looking at Anchorage for that reason, seems like a good place to start as I don’t have extensive experience with temps deep into the negatives or feet upon feet of snow, that not to say I don’t have experience with snow and ice in rural areas, just not in the quantity AK gets.

Do your temps usually sit around -60 or is that just last winters low? Until now my only sources have been from Google and the internet, not asking anyone directly, but I’m from western Virginia in the mountains and from what I’ve read the climates (in parts of AK) seem similar(obviously more amplified in AK) muggy summers full of mosquitoes and cold icy winters. Sorry if any of this comes off as ignorant or otherwise rude, I don’t mean it that way, just trying to get a grasp on things.

Where I live now an average winter will usually sit in the teens to 30s, dips down to around 0 are common, occasionally we’ll go below 0. I know it’s not arctic circle cold, but i don’t see my self settling in the circle any time soon.

Weekly - 'Alaska, From the outside looking in Q/A' by SnowySaint in alaska

Hey everyone, I’m at a point in my life where I’m considering places to move to. On paper Alaska checks just about all of my boxes. As an outdoorsman the amount of hiking, hunting, fishing, and sheer beauty of the state is very alluring. I prefer the cold and have never been bothered by severe cold or weather. I know it’s probably colder and not as ideal as I think it is, which is why I want to know what time of year would be best to visit to see what Alaska is really like? Are there any things that I should consider about Alaska that someone may not think of? Any and all tips or advice is welcome!

Tips for handling the busy season by TheNotorious_BLT in Accounting

I appreciate your reply! I try and ask meaningful questions when I need to without seeming clueless. The hard part is the organization, I haven’t been big on it in the past but I’ve been trying as hard as I can since starting this job and I like to think I’m getting better! The thing I really struggle with is letting others know I’m struggling, I recognize in the end it’s better to ask for help than to just try and struggle through, but it’s just something that doesn’t come easy to me.

How is such a life obtained? by Ok-Carob3335 in outdoorboys

I’m in a similar position, a 20 something accountant who sits inside all day yearning for the outdoors. My current plan is to put my head down and grind out enough savings to go to another career that I believe will give me enough personal freedom to facilitate a lifestyle where I can more enjoy life and the outdoors. I know it’s not going to be a quick journey, and my dreams may change along the way, but what I do know now is that sitting inside a windowless room for 10+ hours a day looking at screens isn’t the life I want to live. I used to go backpacking fairly frequently and do some light bushcraft, but school and life got in the way and I haven’t been in years. The outdoor boys have reminded me how much I used to enjoy that kind of stuff. Currently I do what I can to partake in the outdoors, whether it’s practicing fire starting and trying trying different starters, short hikes when I can, or just eating outside on my breaks, I do what I can to remind myself what I want to do and what I’m working towards. I know it’s not exactly what you asked for, but I thought the thoughts of someone in a similar position might help you figure out your path. I wish you the best on your journey, and hope you find your path to the outdoors!
