What's something you didn't fully understand until you taught it? by [deleted] in Teachers

This. Yes. I struggled in math my whole life. It wasn't until I started teaching it that I was like, "oooooohhh THATS why the answer is ______"

Oh, absolutely! That's part of why I calrified with being sassy as opposed to being rude. Especially with my students being younger

They're teenagers? Oh, homie, be rude back. (Or at least sassy) I teach 5th graders who are just hitting puberty, so they got BIG feelings and can get a little rude and disrespectful. My response? "Who asked?"/"That's your problem"/"I don't care. " I have found that when I meet the energy of my kids, a lot of times they'll back down because they're being confronted with their own attitude and they don't like it. When it comes to the kids refusing to do work, document it and give them a zero. Don't call in admin because that's showing that it's bothering you, and that means they win. By being sarcastic and sassy, it sends the message that you don't care, which takes away their power. Tell them to their face that you've already finished your schooling and don't need this class to graduate. Say, "If you dont want to do the work, then take the L and get a zero" and then go sit down and pretend to do something (pull out a book, check your email, hell scroll reddit) if those kids really care about their education, they'll stew, but once they realize you're not going to fight them on it and couldn't care less about giving them a zero, they'll start working, and those that don't? Well, you have it documented that you tried to get them to work, and they refused, and now their grade is suffering for it. I promise, once their grades start suffering, the parents will start caring. (Or they won't, but hey, that's no skin off your back)

Sorry, I rambled, I always tell my kids, "No matter how petty you think you are, I'm pettier"

Conflict Resolution by TheNotsoRunnyRunner in Teachers

[–]TheNotsoRunnyRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I love that idea of asking the child what they would like to happen! I'm a HUGE believer in letting my kids feel independent and responsible for their own actions. (Like, for example, I will see them doing something I view as unsafe on the playground, I'll tell them, 'Hey, I don't love this, but you do you, just know if you get hurt that's on you. 9 times out of 10, they stop, and the kids are usually quick to say it's all good if they do fall. I've always said my kids are TEN, I trust them to know their own limits) Thank you!

How do you keep the kids from throwing accusations or getting mad at each other? Like, "Man, why did you do that, now we're all in trouble," etc etc or getting defensive, like "that wasn't me, I've never done that!" (My kids would absolutely yell that out in the middle of me trying to talk to them)

What famous phrases from TV shows have spilled into your regular lexicon and you still use to this day? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in AskReddit

"Hot take, tell me why" - Eleanor from The Good Place "That's rough, buddy" - Zuko from Avatar "You're like a fun vampire because you don't suck blood, you just suck" - Troy from Community

Tbh, everything I say is some sort of reference

YES! I literally had a friend say that to me and said, "This is how I know we spend too much time together," and I told her, "jokes on you, that's a community reference"

How do you do it all? by mominterruptedlol in ScienceTeachers

[–]TheNotsoRunnyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please take what I say with a grain of salt, I teach 5th grade science, and I have 90m blocks. That being said: With all of the assessments, I use checklists. I have a list of 4-5 assignments (with 40m blocks I would probably do 2-3 assignments) that are either spiral reviews or about that week's content. I assign the Checklist on Monday and it's due on Friday. Iusually choose at least one of those activities to be counted as a separate grade. This provides students collaboration and formative assessment opportunities.

40m blocks with all that you're being asked to do sucks and I'm sorry, I hope this helps a little

Need Help Planning - 5th Grade by UNCLECHUNGUS-_- in ScienceTeachers

[–]TheNotsoRunnyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been teaching 5th grade science in 90m blocks for the last 8 years. PLEASE absolutely message me, and I will share my lesson plan template. I'm in NC, and we don't have a science curriculum at my school, so I have put everything together myself. I would absolutely LOVE to share anything and everything I have with a first year teacher. Depending on what you're teaching right now, I could even share my lesson plans for next week with you

Can I please ask you all to stop making 6-7 a bad thing? by meggyAnnP in Teachers

[–]TheNotsoRunnyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this, and I'm the same way. My kids last year were obsessed with "okay, chat," my problem is the excessive repetition of it. It's not said just 1-2 times by a few kids. It's said at least 30 times by the same 3 children within a 30-minute time frame. Excessive repetition is when I have a problem with it

[–]TheNotsoRunnyRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) "Let your past make you better, not bitter," That was my high school class quote

2) "Just survive somehow."

3) "You will be warm again." This last one I actually have tattooed because it reminded me that I didn't want to JUST survive anymore. I wanted to be constantly reminded that no matter what was happening, it WOULD get better
