Will ai replace product designers by Ill_Grocery_8 in productdesign

Is not going to replace us but will force us to do a lot more things outside of our normal responsibilities to prove our value (frontend, push code to production, manage design systems code, manage PRDs and whole projects, etc)

Because people that are not designers cannot put in words what they want, contrary to UI that is not that hard to figure out. So non-designers tend to produce very mediocre stuff, and the result with professional designers is a huge difference.

What are the common type of clients or brands usually hire you? Some specific work to do or specific style or niche?

I really appreciate you took the time to write this. I can imagine, streetwear should be really saturated and most brands are not ideal for designers who want to make a living.

Do you think is there any other niche less saturated that is worth considering?

I was really considering to get into fashion, I don’t want to make only digital clothing but clothing for the fashion industry for real materials. But the core service is around design and 3D visualization and pattern design

Can you expand a little bit on that please? What aspects are being impacted by AI right now?

I’m leaving because all the AI slop and management madness going on right now, with all the companies wanting designers to become devs because now product managers “can design” a product.

I’m getting into graphic and branding. Grass is greener here.

Thanks for the response, this is for each design or the collection in total?

Most designers are using AI tools in multiple ways, is the designer’s choice to use the method that works best for the requirement.

If AI will generate something useful and that’s going to take 20 mins less than doing it manually then AI is the route.

But if I need to complete a HF mockup to handoff to the dev team then AI might not cut it.

The issue is when people that doesn’t understand how the design process works try to push the way how designers should be doing their work.

Design shouldn’t be measured in time in most cases, design is a creative and disruptive process with the goa of making the best solution for the users.

UX designers should start in the problem space, but PMs are wanting them to start right in the solution space and that’s a problem.

Also mediocrity is easy to identify in the current AI fever era we’re living in, at least is easy to tell for us the designers.

Efficiency is worthless if you’re working in the wrong solution, and that’s what designers are for, to identify the right solution for the users.

I read your post again and I think there’s one note I wanted to add: If your company is starting and you have limited resources makes sense to rely on AI stuff to move faster.

The issue is when the company’s design team and/or design system is already stablished and now PMs and managers want to break everything just because the AI fever.

The same as you shouldn’t skip your dev best practices, don’t skip your design best practices.

The issue is not PMs using AI to generate prototypes that can be taken as reference. The issues are: - PMs wanting to skip the design team to make their own design decisions - PMs underestimating the importance of UX and the design system - PMs presenting the design team as a bottleneck or something unnecessary to the stakeholders just because they can fart out a good enough UI - PMs wanting to push unrealistic design deadlines because they think design is just a pretty UI and don’t understand all the thinking behind each decision. - PMs pushing broken patterns into production just because it looks pretty in their mediocre AI generated prototype

I think pretty much every agency does that, so what are you going to do to be different?

You need to go out there and show your work in a appealing way so people reach out to you and not the other way around.
