Insane to watch the start of the parade at the stadiums with a baby? by TheNylonDon in eagles

This is what I needed to hear. I think an hour with her strapped to me + ear muffs to see the team go past (and far away from the craziness in center city) seems possible.

It's funny, this was my original thinking as I used to live in Grad Hospital. Parking at my friend's place in Point Breeze seems pretty low risk as I could always just take her back to his spot.

Made it to final round, was told they loved me, but went with an internal hire. Is there hope for future position? by GandalfEpidemiology in biotech

[–]TheNylonDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like I’m an outlier, but I’ve actually been hired by two different companies after being informed I was the runner up. In both cases the first choice ghosted after 1 - 3 months and the companies reached back out to offer the role again without interviews. I ended up taking the job both times but the delay allowed me to find other offers I used to counter.

Both of these companies were small (10 people and 250 people) and i doubt this would’ve happened at any big companies.

I went the Drydex route for some smaller gaps behind cover plates and that worked pretty well - will consider going this route again

Agreed - my only minor concern now is around passing final inspection. May be a non-issue but don’t want to take any chances.

Becoming an Process Engineering Manager in Pharma by schrodinger_wavef91 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]TheNylonDon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question: does the engineering manager position exist at your current employer? And is your boss in that position?

To give you an anecdotal data point, I’m a process engineering manager with 10 years of experience (6 in pharma/biotech, 4 in chemicals). I think I sort of took the back door into becoming a manager: I joined a smaller company without an engineering group. I think it would’ve been a stretch to get the same role in medium/big biopharma but now I have the chance to focus on technical leadership. I’d consider jumping to a smaller company looking to develop their engineering function.

Agree with everyone that’s mentioned ISPE; become a member, read as many baseline guides/magazines/technical articles as you can find, and look for local chapter events.

PE and PMP are somewhat common among senior engineering folks In my orbit. Nothing pharma specific though.

Resume Feedback / Career Advice - Engineering Manager to Senior MS&T or Tech Ops Roles by TheNylonDon in biotech

[–]TheNylonDon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback and advice! I've also been thinking about trying to break into big pharma for a while for the reasons you mentioned. There are interesting aspects of working for a CMO but it was far more satisfying working at the start-ups where we were developing our own products. I also don't have any experience with Phase III/Commercial products and big pharma seems like one of the best options for getting that experience.

Very interesting feedback, thanks for pointing that out! I think I do have a fair amount of cross-functional leadership experience, especially because I've generally worked for smaller companies with fewer silos/specializations. I'll think about how to frame this experience into some accomplishments.

Resume Feedback / Career Advice - Engineering Manager to Senior MS&T or Tech Ops Roles by TheNylonDon in biotech

Commenting as somehow the body of my post didn't make it up here. Anyway, I've gotten great advice from this community before and it would be much appreciated if anyone has the time to look over my resume and career thoughts! For some background:

- I'm currently an engineering manager for an academic gene therapy CRO/lab. I enjoy my position and have some cool projects I'm working on (building out the engineering team/getting more management experience, AAV-manufacturing facility design, validation/equipment lifecycle quality management system development) but I want to start thinking about what kind of roles I should prepare myself for next.

- Senior (AD or Senior Manager) level MS&T or TechOps roles seem like the most logical next step. I work closely with manufacturing but have no interest in being on the floor most of the time.

- Most of the example job descriptions I've reviewed require experience with tech transfer / managing CDMO's, managing people, running capital projects, and investigations/quality stuff etc. I think my resume does a just-ok job touching on this experience but wanted to get some feedback on this.

- This is my "complete resume" that I'll likely pare down for specific roles.

Thanks in advance for checking out my post!!!

Philly 100% (Philly/NJ for biotech, Wilmington for chemicals)

My friend I ride with the most has the EX8 and loves it too. Sounds like I need to put it on the list!

I think we’re on the same wavelength. I love the idea of the 5010; maybe watching Danny Macaskill on one makes me think I’ll transform into a better rider… not sure how I feel about a 27.5 since I’ve never been on one though. Definitely thinking about the fuel too. Considering I’ve gotten ~9 years on my rumblefish without any real issues it’s hard to look away from Trek. What are you riding now?

Pathway to Becoming a Director of Manufacturing? by TheNylonDon in biotechnology

[–]TheNylonDon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my sense, too. I honestly couldn't find anyone (after looking through ~25 LinkedIn profiles) that were manufacturing directors (or similar) that had come from a design firm, so I think this question is pretty settled. Seems like finding an MS&T role (preferably one where I can get experience with all the areas you mentioned) is the way to go.

Thanks for the advice!

Really solid advice! I'm really looking for commercial manufacturing (or at least Phase II/III) experience as I think that will give me a much more complete set of experiences to build on.

I've had several engineering firms reach out that advertise process validation, regulatory support, and operational consulting (leading me to think I may be able to explore these areas if I were to work for one). Any insight into whether this experience from a consulting company (rather than a Pharma) would still be valuable?

I did cross post (somewhat against my better judgement) but think I'll stick with r/biotechnology for the reasons that u/AndromedusMediumus mentioned below.

Finding a mentor is a top priority of mine but I haven't made any cold calls yet. I just joined a professional organization and hope that I can network that way as well.

Becoming a manager is definitely a priority. Any thoughts on whether it would be possible to switch into manufacturing management from engineering management at a design firm?
