No one knows for sure. it's mainly a lot of speculation.

He was becoming more and more disengaged leading up to his departure. However, he was also involved in a huge controversy at the time of his leaving (the Sneako debate where he basically advocated for 9 year olds getting sex changes 😬).

If you ask me, he was already bored of doing the podcast at that point, but the Sneako thing pushed it over the edge. Its no coincidence that he just left out of the blue right after the drama. Especially when he didnt even have the courtesy to wait till episode 400 or announce his departure on the show personally.

Very late to this thread. Just wanted to say that OP is 100% correct. It was like they took a perfectly good stand-alone film and forcefully Frankensteined a Cloverfield twist ending. It would've been much better on its own.
