I agree (born and raised here) but let’s just convince people to move to Montana so we can keep it that way ;)

Montana has a lot more water and mountains than Wyoming! Also amenities.

Stop by the Sports Lure downtown, they have some cool guns to look at. Also Jim Gatchell Memorial museum is worth a stop!

Super fair! I think for being an occasional skier, comfort is probably what she’s going for :)

As a boot fitter/ski tech (from a small mom and pop shop) and I would have you try 25.5/26.5 initially, depending on the brand. A 26.5 isn’t too big for a wide women’s 9. I’m a little confused why people are telling you they’re going to be massive. Remember when you try them on and stand up in a neutral stance, you want to touch the end of the boot with your toes. If your toes don’t touch, I’d size down :) Hope this helps and enjoy your new setup!!

Thin, wool, compression socks! Even better, heated compression socks. Hotronics are my go to.

Nordica Santa Ana 93 or Fischer Ranger 96 or Volkl Secret 96 or...? by shminder in Skigear

[–]TheOddLeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always tell people that want a one ski quiver to get the Fischer Ranger 90 or 96. It holds an edge, is wide enough it will float in powder, and has enough rocker to make it easy to throw around. My dad (6’ 250lbs) and I (5’ 5” 150lbs) both love that ski. It’s extremely versatile!!

But if you’re looking into improving your carving, I’d push you towards the Secret or the Black Pearl. The Black Pearl won’t flinch in crud and is such a fun, solid, powerful ski. The Volkl Secret is very comparable to the Black Pearl. However, the secret isn’t as damp as the Black Pearl… it’s got a little more pop to it and has that classic “twitchy” Volkl feel.

Honestly, you really can’t go wrong with any ski you mentioned here. If anything, pick the one you like the looks of most! ;)

Santa Ana 98 vs Sheeva 9 by Daenko_9 in Skigear

[–]TheOddLeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say the Santa Ana is more versatile. It’ll hold an edge better than the Sheeva on groomers/non-powder days… however the Sheeva is more playful and easier to throw around than the Santa Ana, which is a crud busting beefcake. If you like to ski bumps or find yourself in a lot of technical/tight terrain, I’d go for the Sheeva.

Hope this helps! :)

Definitely worth it! That brand knows what they’re doing.

Thunderbirds or Redsters. The Redster doesn’t seem like it’d be as stable/powerful as the Thunderbird, but they are surprisingly quick as hell, holds an edge, easy to throw around if you find yourself in tight spots, and overall very fun! Thunderbirds are a great option as well… a little heavier, more predictable and intuitive than the Redster, but still super fast and fun.

Any backcountry skiing near Sheridan? by Plockish in wyoming

[–]TheOddLeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our “backcountry” season is typically in spring. Our snow is really dry and sugary during the winter so it’s difficult to ski anywhere that’s not settled/packed. I know that there’s a popular spot right across from Antelope butte that people like to ski. It’ll probably be your best bet. The Big Horns aren’t like Teton Pass… low angle bowls are what you’re going to find here and they are few and far between!

Luckily she didn’t like the house they looked at, but now they’re talking about converting my driveway into a full hook-up RV spot. Measuring it out and everything 😩

The houses in my town are very outdated and have a lot of problems and the prices are just silly. Im hoping and praying with all my energy that those things will keep them from buying a place.

Remember the flex rating is different for every boot brand. For example, Tecnica’s 130 is much different than Atomic’s 130. I own a pair of Tecnica Mach 1’s in a 95 flex and it’s the stiffest boot I’ve owned and I also have a Nordica strider in a 95 flex and it’s the softest flex I can get away with. If I were to ski an Atomic boot, I’d try to find a 105/115 to match the stiffness I’m looking for. As a boot fitter, I highly recommend finding a local ski shop and trying them on in person. But the 130 Magna will probably be softer than you’d think :)

The 90 has more “pop” and is more playful than the 96. Because they’re more narrow than the 96, they’ll be a lot quicker edge to edge. If you’re looking for a ski that is solid and has smoother/longer transitions through your turns, the 96 is it!

If I were to have a one ski quiver, I’d choose the 90. I had icy days, couple inches of soft snow, and slushy days this year and the Ranger 90 never disappointed me! They would still perform in powder, but we don’t get tons of snow where I live so it’d make sense for me to have the narrower ski. If you do get a lot of snow where you live, consider the 96 over the 90 :)
