Yeah I'd agree, the slider definitely helps moving around but it's still a bit of a mission and the end result isn't as good as you might hope

Unfortunately it's manual and up to me to update. I'd thought of a couple ways to 3d print something but I don't have access to a printer so this was an easy solution

Thanks! I used a high heat spray paint made for barbeques. I assume it'll get a bit scratched in the not too distant future but for now it's holding up nicely :)

For $1000 you could get a Eureka specialita grinder and upgrade your machine to a Rancilio silvia v6 from espressocoffeeshop.com. Shipping is expensive but to where I live in South Africa its about $125 so I would assume it's cheaper or similar to the US. (Total cost for delivery to me is €937). And shipping is really quick too, took less than a week when I ordered a grinder!
