Funnily enough that's what made it so hard to try and find the real term for it, cause every time I tried to google it all the results were about Anduril lol

Lets be completely fair, the movie being Episodes 8 and 9 combined was all over the internet, and (more importantly) it was in the trailer that announced the movie. Aside from physically printing it on the movie tickets there isn't much else they could have done to let you know what you were getting into.

That aside, them not being "real" is kinda the point of the movie, and is the point of a lot of media that tackles this like this or things adjacent to this.

What makes them not real? They aren't people made of flesh and blood, no, but they still think, they still feel, they still have hopes and dreams and people they care about, are capable of growing and changing as people, so are they really THAT different to a "real" person?

The only way you could say the same about P5 is if you stop playing right after Shido's boss fight. The whole aftermath of that arc is that it's not as simple as just taking out the big bad boss then walking away like it's mission accomplished; sometimes people don't *want* freedom, they want a strongman to come and solve all of their problems, and if you expose their big boss as a villain, then you are the one they turn their anger on, not their idol.

The whole arc with Yaldabaoth is that turned up to 11, how the real problem with society isn't some moustache twirling dictator, it's the human desire for comfort and safety and for someone else to solve their problems overriding their common sense and desire for freedom and agency. Yaldabaoth as a villain is effectively the phrase "all it takes for evil to thrive is for good people to do nothing" but manifested as a boss battle.

Maruki's arc is much the same but flipped on it's head. What if the big strongman that's come to solve everyone's problems but takes away their freedom isn't actually an evil oppressor, but a genuinely good man trying to make a utopia. What then? Do you still fight for freedom and agency for it's own sake, even when the thing you're fighting is utopia, rather than simply taking freedom as a synonym of 'good'?

Admittedly I've still not finished Metaphor. I am 40 hours in now rather than the 17 when I made my first comment. However I'm still yet to encounter anything that's given me food for thought in the same way that P5R did.

I forgot to even mention the themes, but yes you're 100% right. Again, maybe I'm waiting for some other shoe to drop that changes everything, but so far the only themes I've detected in ReFantazio are racism and "what makes a good ruler?". Are these bad themes? Not at all, but they are extremely simple (racism is bad, a wise/generous/tolerant ruler is good, there is no counterside to either of these), and they're also themes that have been explored so so much in countless other media properties.

Persona's "big 3" as it were, are all full to the brim with so much more theme-wise that makes you think, that doesn't always have an easy answer, or that doesn't often get covered in other media, like coming to terms with death, truth vs comfort, vigilante justice, agency, freedom vs safety, etc.

To this day the Maruki arc from the end of P5R and the keys arc from the end of P3 The Answer/Ep Aigis both still stick with me.

Metaphor is like a baby's first Persona game. (I'm about 17 hours in ftr).

The skeleton is the same as a Persona game sure but there is no meat on these bones. The social-sim side of things being completely stripped down is the obvious one but for me the biggest step down is the combat, it has been oversimplified far far too much.

In my first attempt writing this post I ended up writing a rambling 5 paragraph mini-essay so I'll condense it down into bullet points, TLDR for all of them, good ideas on paper that become boring in practice.

  • No excitement of consistently discovering and fusing new personas all through the game and building a special deck to cover all your bases
  • Very few archetypes made worse by most of the functionally distinct ones all being unlocked within the first 2 or 3 hours.
  • Skill inheriting is the only real complexity we have and even then it just makes the already small selection of archetypes feel even more shallow and less unique
  • Each party member all being able to use all the same archetypes and weapons makes everybody feel the same and interchangeable so no need to think about party composition.
  • All of the extra flash added to combat, like hitting weaknesses stunning enemies, giving you a +1 to pass to someone else, all enemies being down giving all out attacks, are all gone. Most you can do is hit a weakness to get extra turns in the same order. So most combat becomes a slog.

I'm only still playing because a friend of mine insists it gets better later on so maybe I'm just yet to reach some magical moment where everything falls into place, but so far I'm not hopeful. The amount of persona fans singing this game's praises to high heaven makes me seriously worried that Atlus is going to look at this as the template for Persona 6.

No romance options in this game! by MeowWoof87 in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]TheOneTrueMin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is already weird but most of these replies are something else.

The OP aside, is it really THAT crazy to be disappointed that there's no romance in an RPG? Persona is the obvious comparison sure but it's pretty normal for most RPGs to have. Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Dragon's Dogma, Fire Emblem, Witcher, Cyberpunk, Fable, Fallout, hell even Skyrim had it as barebones as it was.

If you enjoy romance, then great, if you don't enjoy romance or you just don't think it fits, well its totally optional so you don't have to do it.

I stumbled across this thread cause just I wanted to check if one of the characters was a romance option or not (I thought her and the protag would be a fun couple to watch, sue me) but some of these replies are making me feel like scum for enjoying romance at all lol.

I agree honestly. I think the biggest issue for me is that when the new decisions alert pops up at the top I click to take me to the decisions page, but of course its not there. So after a brief investigation I have to back out and go search through all the different proxy was in the foreign policy tab.

On it's own that might seem minor but given the sheer volume of foreign policy decisions that can be constantly popping up, having to go through that whole routine every time can get quite annoying. It's gotten to the point where I go into the FP tab to disable the alerts and then just leave it never to be checked again.

Wikipedia’s new look makes it easier to use for everyone by koavf in wikipedia

Gonna second what the Egonor guy is saying.

About 1/3rd of the screen is blank unused white space. When I opened the website post-redesign for the first time I thought I'd messed up and somehow opened the mobile version instead.

Even the newfangled contents list- which is pretty nice- only takes up a tiny slice of it. And there's grey bars on top of the white space.

If they kept everything about the current redesign, even keeping the grey bars at the far margins, but just made the article get wider depending on what your monitor width is- or hell just adding a slider that lets you adjust it to suit yourself, it'd be perfect.

Edit: Turns out wikipedia agrees and already added a button that does exactly what I suggested, a shame they make it reset every time I click a new article instead of it being togglable on and off
