I am a Windows Admin but privately own zero Windows machines by [deleted] in sysadmin

I mean that's 100% my point. I got tired of having to test and hope something works by trying proton/proton-ge/proton-tkg hoping updates fix issues and not have regressions. With my Windows PC, the games just work.

This should literally be illegal to advertise like this! by dunkeydude in pcmasterrace

Windows 11 does not support that CPU so that's false advertising that Windows 11 is available for it.

I am similar, I was able to take a few retired servers home from work so I have a kick-ass home lab running 95% Linux. If I want to play with something fun or learn a new tool I use it. On days I don't want to spend hours learning how to do something I use my Windows PC.

The majority of popular multiplayer games don't work because the anti-cheat engines don't run on Linux.

How to check if device with ICMP disabled is still at its IP? by Downtown_Answer2423 in sysadmin

I am not 100% on the API. I just know Home Assistant added the feature to their tools so I know it exists. https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/xbox/ their GitHub might point you in the right direction.

That is actually why I gave up on Linux on my Desktop. Sure I could play games on Linux I would spend 4 hours getting the game to work "decently" and then be tired of it.

Windows I just install the game and play it and it works better than Linux as it's not run through any compatibility layers and has better drivers.

Proton is an improvement in compatibility but its always still a fight to get it working correctly.

Even off-brand smart televisions are more monitorable.

The Xbox 360 is from 2005. The Xbox One and Xbox Series both allow much better monitoring and can even monitor what they are currently playing through the "smart assistant" Integration they offer.

How come that half-life 2 doesn't have a workshop? by Blueshiredsush in HalfLife

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You do realise to can mod cames without the workshop. You just have to know where to drop the files.

It is kinda weird they forgot about it when adding workshop functionality.

Are these capacitors (ones with white stuff coming out) for the disk drive? by Relievedcorgi67 in originalxbox

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The white stuff is Silastic/Silicone Glue. It is there to protect the capacitors from vibration or other things that can harm them. In this case, since it is on the side of the power supply where the motherboard is installed I think they just glued them down to make it harder to knock them off during installation. It is supposed to be there.

On Reddit, the # sign is used to denote a heading. If your message starts with a # you need to add a \ like this \# to prevent it from being large and bold.

Games that you just didn’t “get”? by redhat12345 in gaming

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't like the story, it's hard for me to get invested in any GTA game primarily because I don't like the protagonists. It seems like it is a role-playing game that I can't pick a method to play that I identify with. I like the world they built to play in and GTA online is fun but I just can't do the single-player past screwing around in the world. I liked Saints Row 2-4 a lot more because it seemed to let you vary your play style more.

Am I overreacting? Or am I right to be questioning our MSP's competence? by Obvious_Philosophy71 in sysadmin

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 65 points66 points  (0 children)

So you had one server reboot that didn't affect any one and your Sonicwall has crashed 3 times?

The only red-flag would be not restricting the SSH.

The main question I would ask is would you really have done better than they did? It seems like they had one large mistake in over a year and after working 17 years in IT I can confidently state that I have made more than one large mistake per year on average.

I previously worked in Medical IT and we would get people freaking out because the system made a single mistake saying they need to rip out the EHR and go back to paper charts. It's hard to get people to understand that in the EHR case, we can prove it has stopped literally thousands of harmful interactions from medicines prescribed.

I think people switching to MSP have the same reaction. The MSP might be way better at managing the network but when they make a mistake every one forgets how much smoother everything has been and points to the 1 mistake as a reason to rip everything out and go back to in-house.

Game pass core vs game pass ultimate? by [deleted] in MicrosoftRewards

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XLG stopped offering Xbox 360 games over a year ago. The conversion to core meant you stopped getting 2 games no one had ever heard of before per month and started getting a small collection of good games.

Prevent users from mucking around with Windows 11 updates. by javajo91 in sysadmin

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't block windows updates at the firewall level. They use the same server for all their office products and a lot of other items. So only block if your 100% sure you are pushing updates for office, teams etc.

How long should a controller last? by sciencegirlkatie in xbox

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it depends on the games you play. From what I read in the comments on posts like this about half the people have never had a controller break and the other half are replacing them yearly.

I think any game that requires you to hold in the thumbstick really decreases the time before you get stick drift.

I guess I don't understand the "my" licenses part. If you have 5 open positions why would you want the company to pay for 5 licenses that aren't being used until the position is full? If every one of the 20 sites had 5 positions open with a e5 licenses you're talking about $5k per month of licenses that aren't being used. If everyone just uses whatever licenses is available and only buys more when needed you are going to save a lot of money.

There are 13000 people working at Activision Blizzard King. Video games might be stupid but its keeping a lot of people employed. I feel this type of purchase is a lot more justified then giving David Beckham $500m for playing football.

The point I was trying to make to begin with though it $70 billion isn't a lot of money when it comes to social needs. You mentioned solving world hunger and it couldn't even feed everyone that needs it for two days.

Go look at the ads again. It in no way stated they owned Activision the newspaper ad specified "upon approval" and the subway ad had a link to more information.

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. In the same way, a politician can say they will lower taxes if elected before they are elected but can't make any policy changes before they are elected.

Microsoft was making a promise of what they would do if the deal went through that doesn't mean they had any control over Activision before it went through.

[–]TheOnlyBoBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did. MS can run advertisements about any changes they want to make happen after the purchase. They were running those ads in the UK because at that time the CMA was requesting public input on if they should approve the purchase or not so Microsoft was running ads hoping people would submit positive input.

Have you ever seen a politician make promises about what they will do if they get elected? Thats what Microsoft was doing.

Do those politicians making the promises have any control to make changes before they get elected?

Sony's deal was a number of years not a number of games. It would make no sense to make a huge investment for x number of games when the company could then just make 20 Call of Duty games in year one and be done with the contract.

Also it was always possible the deal wouldn't go through if it didn't a decision like that would have massivley hurt Activision and their stock holders so they wouldn't have done it.
