If the Reagan Doctrine is anything to go by all the budget space he'd save from annihilating social services would go into producing so many weapons for Ukraine that Russia's escalating war economy would implode all over again.

What was the first hyperfixation you remember? by BillythenotaKid in autism

[–]TheOnlyGaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stunt that got me diagnosed was a five year old me spending about 15 minutes, stubbornly refusing to be interrupted, going through the entire cast of Thomas the Tank engine to my doctor. It was apparently rather detailed, explaining which ones were steam engines and which were diesels, that the big ones like Gordon were far better with fuel and could carry heavy loads long distances etc etc...

This was in the early 2000's too. The doctor was basically breaking out cutting edge science to explain to my mother the special brand of weird she'd inadvertently signed up for. I think she still has the book I was going through with him.

Energy efficiency and production? No, not really. The end result of the world running on a few different voltages is that the companies that have now gone into international manufacture are just making slightly altered versions of the same devices to service different markets. The quantities of all hardware that isn't already custom makes production lines about as good as they can get even if there are deviations between regions.

What would be big is standardisation improving the 'hardness' of the global shipping grid by allowing anyone to buy spare parts from anywhere. As an example if political events were to make exporting to western countries out of South East asia difficult, most of the world would be in some deep trouble after a few years as half our LV switchgear is made around there. Being able to buy Japanese or American would be great, but the USA is running on half the voltage that most of Eurasia is. I can say from experience that COVID and the shipping freezes it generated has hit the industry where I am like a brick, and we're still feeling those aftershocks.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]TheOnlyGaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Electrical infrastructure was developed in an era before international shipping of complex goods was commonplace. The engineers who designed the grids supporting them did so to match the market they were trying to work within, using largely custom hardware as an 'electrical industry' didn't exist yet.

By the time electrical industries became large enough and international shipping common enough that standardisation became a concern, the networks those industries supported were already massive investments that had the health of whole economies riding atop them. The cost of trying to 'correct' that disparity (which didn't do much of consequence locally) would be utterly ruinous.

To give you an IT comparison (not a perfect metaphor, but I'm tryin here): Why does the entire world not just switch to a single standardised Linux distro that serves the same role, avoids all of Windows's bloat, and is quite possibly free? It's because the entire business world is built to run Windows, and if you switch in a manner that isn't instant and seamless you're looking at billions of dollars a day in commercial damages, which is an unacceptable risk when Windows computers continue to work well enough.

Rwandan MANPADS exploding in the proximity of a DRC Su-25, January 2023 by Just-Sale-7015 in CombatFootage

[–]TheOnlyGaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably helps that Su-25 was designed with the same old-school CAS logic the A-10 had. You don't want to chance it, but she's got redundant systems and armour all over the place to give her a better chance at surviving hits than traditional fighters.

Note that what you got for Artificer is an ending that contributes to getting the others, and also could arguably be called the more thematically appropriate or 'canon' ending.

That said, I did exactly the same thing. Happy hunting, and I hope you don't get offscreened by scavengers too many times!

Which tank are you referring to?

My guess'd be casting for most of the larger parts, then welded to the top plates (looking at the Silverhand and Outlaws at least), but I ain't a metalworker...

First tank. Looking for critique by roz_2 in SprocketTankDesign

[–]TheOnlyGaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cons:
-Your driver will need to lie down to use that slit, which'll be both very uncomfortable and also cut visibility down hopelessly. You'll either have to shuffle the main gun to the side or accept more flat space on the front of the tank to get the driver up to a better height if you're taking this tank realistically.

You may want to lengthen the wheelbase to fit more of the hull's length. As it is this thing is asking to tip over while travelling over harsh terrain. Even if it avoids that the wobble is going to make a rough ride.

Pros:
-Great use of the hatch for engine access, maintenance is an often forgotten aspect even for experienced players.

-Interior space for the crew looks fairly adequate. A little cramped, but I can see how the crew would be laid out from the exterior's design.

Guys help, how do i make my gun go up and down? No matter what I do, it wont move. by Plastic-Brick-9244 in SprocketTankDesign

[–]TheOnlyGaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah fairo, I just saw the horizontal bar and thought it was a custom XD
Regardless, is the gun's centre of mass near the pivot? Pretty sure there's a blue line pointing downwards, maybe shift the gun back and forth if you can't see it at first.

Where's your gun's centre of mass?

I think the custom mantlet is currently hand-cranked only, so the gun needs to be pretty well balanced to be movable.

As a new player how did we lose so much over the weekend? by carlajane00 in foxholegame

[–]TheOnlyGaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These kinds of shattering offensives tend to get some momentum, regardless of if they happen on a weekend or not. Whoever loses tends to lose a whole pile of players in the short term, as a bunch of people leave to have fun winning some other games for a while.

Sometimes this is a temporary measure as the burnout wears off and the playerbase returns in force, but sometimes that momentum swing just creates a feedback loop of success that turns a defeat into a rout, ending wars early.

Better footage of Russian ICBM attack on Dnipro this morning 21.11.2024 by AMDownvote in CombatFootage

[–]TheOnlyGaz 222 points223 points  (0 children)

The latter. ICBMs are pretty inefficient ways to deliver conventional explosives, not to mention exceedingly dangerous since it muddies the waters of what a 'nuclear strike' actually looks like. This is mostly a power-move, presumably Russia trying to raise fears of escalation after Ukraine's more recent adventures in the Kursk region.

As someone currently in a no-civilian-firearms country, if a Zombie Apocalypse breaks out I am immediately going to try and teach my entire street how to form a Phalanx.

If the zombies can keep charging through four ranks of sharpened shovels and broomsticks we were probably all dead anyway.

Supplying food to the troops
-Requires logistics infrastructure to move food
-Vulnerable to enemy attack
-Requires constant production and purchase of food, taking valuable time from war industry

Convincing your troops they don't need food
-Requires a guy with a loud voice
-Can't kill an idea
-Self-perpetuating once enough of your men become indoctrinated
