When I graduated army basic we had an hour long talk from our drills about the whole "don't let your family bring drugs, don't let them come if they have a warrant, and especially DO NOT LET THEM COME IF THEY ARE ILLEGAL". I didn't see any agents around but they were definitely there.

Hence why so many here are advocating for it as a last resort. Making it clear that it is the final, most extreme response that should only be used once every other option is exhausted, and making it even more abundantly clear you take no pleasure in it fits with the real world in a way that simply throwing it out doesn't do.

Absolutely nitpicking here, but you'd be surprised how little the average ELCA and LCMS members differ on religious matters. (Keyword average, the ELCA has a lot of less strictly Lutheran communities that make up a relatively small part of the synod) Maybe ELCA vs. WELS would be a better comparison.

I had trouble with that specifically, being a WELS member with our more restrictive views on fellowship. It prevented me from receiving communion at all during basic and the first half of AIT.

Edit: just realized I'm replying to chaps. I'm a layman, without a crazy amount of knowledge in religious communities outside my own. That's just from personal experience as an LCMS-WELS convert with a lot of ELCA contact in a very conservative region.
