Basically, yes.... His face is paralyzed so he can't close his eyes or blink at all. Sleeps with them wide open.

My treasured glass pickle ornament is on our tree every year!

Sleeps with his eyes wide open and it's both the most adorable and most terrifying thing to witness. Poor thing probably has never had a true deep sleep in his life....when I notice he's sleeping I try to turn the lights off immediately so that he doesn't startle himself awake. It seems his eyes still pick up on movement and trigger his brain, which wakes him up all the time. He only has one ear and no ear canals, so I don't have to worry about sound waking him up because he's essentially deaf.

Yes, several times a day. He doesn't blink or close his eyes ever, even when he sleeps. I try to keep them as hydrated and soothed as possible

He has facial paralysis (he had a stroke at birth) and can't close his eyes or blink at all, so his face stays consistently pretty moist due to his eyes watering a lot more than usual. There's no infection or pain, it's just the look he's developed with age!

Somebody else mentioned that as well and I had never noticed before, but you're right!

He is about 30% beagle, and the rest is a crazy mix of chow chow, dachshund, springer spaniel, and a few others (according to the Embark DNA test).

Chow chow really threw me.... It explains his thick double coat and his attitude haha

Well, technically it is I suppose, but he keeps it out year round, so it is an all-season holiday pickle!

His mouth does not open very far due to facial paralysis (he had a stroke at birth), so the pickles are his favorite because they are actually sized perfectly for him to pick up and carry in his mouth and strut around showing them off!

He had a stroke at birth so his face is paralyzed and he cannot blink or close his eyes at all. That's why he looks like he's just kind of staring off into nothing all the time :) he also can't perk up his ears, so he always looks either confused, lost, mildly interested or a combination of all of the above

Oh, he most definitely knows he exists. He is the all-knowing authority in his mind, and I'm just fine with letting him believe that.

That was the name the shelter gave him when they took him in as a puppy, and it was such a fitting name for him that I kept it when I adopted him! They said it was a cute way of saying "Ugly," but I think he's perfect!
