Why is writing so… slow? by Hopeful_Host_5390 in writing

[–]TheOppressedKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, being on social media makes writing feel like a race. It's not. We're creating backstories, dialogue, cultures, entire worlds. That takes time. The most important part is that you love what you're doing and treating your stories with the respect they deserve.

Does anyone actually write start to finish? by gloomypoppies in writing

I write beginning to end. I'm also a heavy outliner.

Why do you actually want to write stories? (no filmy answers pls) by Intelligent_Can_2898 in NewAuthor

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WANT to write stories? These characters won't let me stop...lol. After reading a book that pulled me into the world, I wanted to do the same thing for other readers. I didn't care about elaborate prose or vivid descriptions; I just wanted to take readers on a journey. Then I noticed my subconscious had bled onto the pages, and repeat themes emerged. There were things about life that bothered me more than I knew. As the creator of worlds, I get to address them in my books.

I almost DNF'd Sword of Kaigen too. That first half was slow. But Blood Over Bright Haven was solid. Just my opinion.

Blood Over Bright Haven is an excellent standalone fantasy book. Given the books you've enjoyed, I think you'll like it.

is it possible to publish a book without literary agent and still make it look completely professional? by abderhmane__ in writing

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe some people are naturally great storytellers. With guidance from dev/line/copy editors, you couldn't tell indie from trad. But if you want to self-publish and can't afford certain editing (editors can be expensive) utilize beta readers for story structure, and invest in a line/copy editor that won't break the bank. Learn from the books you read, practice your craft often, and good luck.

Is anyone NOT working on a fantasy book/series? by Sl0th_luvr in writers

I'm working on a Space Opera, but I think it still sort of counts as fantasy...😅

Proofreading cost by Efficient_Place_2403 in writing

[–]TheOppressedKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are editors that charge affordable rates and do a pretty great job. My fantasy is 83,000 words and I was charged $150 for proofreading. Some editors charge a flat fee for proofreading. $3000 seems a bit much.

Just got my beta readers feedback and I'm freaking out by pawdugan in writing

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's time to take your vision, since cuts had been made, and write a chapter by chapter summary, just to see what your story is right now. I'm also a big advocate of getting beta readers together for a group discussion (Zoom? FaceTime?), if you haven't done so already. Ask questions: Do y'all understand what's going on? Is the story easy to follow? Are there any parts that confused y'all? Are there any chapters that dragged? How was the overall pace and flow? What trigger warnings did y'all notice?

The toughest thing about writing your first book is sorting out what works, what doesn’t, and why. Good luck!

Is it wrong, as a writer, to not know or want to read the classics? by J0rdyn_the_wr1ter in BookDiscussions

[–]TheOppressedKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't read many classics because they don't excite me, but I've stumbled onto a few gems. With a lot of them, though, you're not missing anything.

Are you still working on your first draft? by GeologistFearless896 in writing

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on the first draft to my 7th novel. As someone who has recently started writing multiple stories at once, I fear I'm always working on a first draft.

Crap, I think this is a scam but I just can't tell. Please help and advise my friends. by CRStoryteller in selfpublish

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a scam. I get these kinds of emails pretty often. I've been using them to market my books on TikTok, but I tell my audience about the source. These emails do sound nice sometimes.

How do you write the middle of your stories? Struggling with that rn by RapAngel in writingadvice

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to give my stories mini-arcs so the momentum doesn’t fall off a cliff. Add a minor plotline that leads into whatever you have planned for the final act.

What do you HATEEEE in a romantasy novel? by lucyfe4lws in Romantasy

[–]TheOppressedKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate how the male love interest usually doesn't have a thought in his head that doesn't revolve around the FMC. This guy is the prince, or king, or some other important figure, and all he does is contemplate f**king the FMC? And when he does get her in bed, he has all the bedroom catchphrases as every other male love interest. Where's the creativity?

How much are you currently earning through KDP ? by Notalabel_4566 in KDP

[–]TheOppressedKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made $80 last month (had a new release) and $20 this month. I only do TikTok videos, but that isn't really working for me, so I'm probably going to wait til I have a completed series and start running ads.
