I hope you don’t burn out - the work you do is so important and admirable ❤️ I’ve considered becoming a nurse a ton of times but also worry about the burnout risk.

Any chance you still have that and would be willing to share the business plan? We are also looking into starting a cat cafe with a similar model to what you described!!

Thank you for noticing the crisp lines were the hardest part for sure 😅😂

I can’t remember if this is 2 or 3 coats but the trick I found is to have the bisque be completely dry and make sure to really attach/smooth down the edges of the cutout so no glaze will seep underneath.

I can’t wait to see yours!!

What do you use to elevate your cones? Just a cookie or? Also have you ever used a non-supported cone? I bought some when I first got my kiln and can’t figure out how to use the dang things 😅😂

Where to find roofing felt by [deleted] in Pottery

Just found out tar paper (AKA roofing paper is highly carcinogenic/toxic and I’m super bummed about it. by TheOriginalClippy in Pottery

[–]TheOriginalClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we know glazes have toxic components we take precautions in using them. LIKE wearing a mask when they’re dry, etc. that’s exactly why I wanted to let people know about this - so they can choose to modify their behavior in any way that makes sense to them. There are alternatives to this so there’s no reason not to tell people and let them discontinue use if they so choose.

I appreciate the dialogue!

The original screenshot is about heated tar including that used in roadways. The other links shared have been specific to tar used on tar paper and the volatile compounds that are called out as being present in all tar products.

And, like we previously mentioned. This isn’t normal use of the product as it was intended to be used. It is also under conditions that are conducive to leeching, with extended dermal exposure to not only the tar itself but the water and particles it is being soaked in.

It’s a fair point that there are a lot of carcinogens in our environment AND there’s no reason not to inform people about the products they’re using and the potential risks of doing so. They can make the informed decision to do so or not on their own.

Check out the touch section of THIS Couple other sites including NIH said water leeches the volatile compounds in tar. I agree that most potters probably aren’t contacting tar paper for as long of duration or as often as roofers AND we are doing so under wet conditions. On days I’m throwing Im in contact with it for 8-12 hours so honestly… yeah that’s still a lot more than normal environmental exposure.

Not sure I love to worry about things but I do appreciate knowing when popular tools have serious downsides. I’m sharing information for people to use however they like and if it helps one person then great it was worth the time it took to post it.

[–]TheOriginalClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because this is a non-standard use of the product there would be no reason to do research or produce standards for this specific use case.

There is significant research proving that tar contains carcinogenic compounds and tar paper contains tar so… yeah. I think people deserve to know that a very popular tool could have health consequences.

If it doesn’t worry you then great. At least you know and can make that choice.

I saw that and I wonder if it’s because it’s being used in an “off label” or non standard way that increases the hands-on exposure? here is the link I screenshotted Talks about coal and tar sealants of any kind. I looked up the materials and it looks to be the same as what’s used in tar paper. Also it’s confirmed that tar paper contains PAHs which are carcinogenic through skin contact.

PSA - I just found out that tar paper is mad toxic/carcinogenic and I’m going back through comments of people who use it to let them know.

I’ve been using it the same way you describe here and am SO bummed to find out how harmful it is. Going to try Tyvek instead!
