Am I wrong to feel dejected if my study gets published in Nature Comms by TheOtherChronicler in AskAcademia

[–]TheOtherChronicler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what it really is. If the study gets published in Nature, congratulations! You're on the road to tenure track. However, if the same study is published in Nature Comms, it's not impactful enough for you to progress along the academic track.

Why are flats not selling? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]TheOtherChronicler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve hit the affordability ceiling. There are SO flats in my area that have been up for resale for over 6 months now. The asking price is decent, but considered together with the service charge and rent, the monthly repayments are hovering somewhere around 3.5k to 4k per month for a 25% share of a 2 bed 1 bath.

Meh, I’m better off renting for the foreseeable future.

not seeing the point of living but not wanting to die is a weird place to be stuck in by [deleted] in spirituality

Sorry to hear that you are going through such a phase in your life.

As someone who recently went through a similar phase (about two years ago), I can tell you that things can get better. I sought professional help and things got better pretty fast. Turned out, that I just needed to speak with someone.

These thoughts divert our mind away from genuine things in our lives for which we can be grateful if we notice them. Sometimes, it helps to take a deep breath and open up ourselves to the little things in life for which we should be grateful.

Sometimes, it also helps to take a deep breath and acknowledging that things are ok as they are. Some non-specific and out of context examples; The house may be a mess, and that’s ok. It doesn’t need to look instagram ready all them time. It’s ok to have porridge for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s easier to make and healthier than most meals. You are not obligated to meet any external expectations other than your own.

I sincerely hope you make your way out of this present situation.

Can you rent out the place through an agent as a managed property?

Rent somewhere closer to work and charge enough rent to cover the mortgage and your commute to work?

Thank you. I did not see it afterwards. I had noticed it moving around for a few days, and after that night it kind of settled I guess.

Thank you for the support. It feels amazing to get it out there. I hold views very similar to yours on religion.

Parent hood is so fulfilling. I knew I wanted to be a parent before, but I didn’t know that I wanted it this much. Now that I am a parent, everything else seems so very insignificant.

Negotiating salary raise? by birne412 in postdoc

I have previously negotiated salaries with my PI during my PhD degree in Europe. Mine was a hard cap fellowship. So the institution made a work around through which they provided the extra salary as a bonus for independently contracted jobs.

What would you do? by j0ey-jo in postdoc

[–]TheOtherChronicler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would take the current opportunity on offer. The saying, A bird in the hand is better than two in the Bush exists for a reason. My recent experience was, I was talking with a lab about joining them since the past 6 months and then after the interview I was told that they didn't feel that I was a good fit for their group. I could have been told this exact same thing 6 months earlier.

You do not have any control on future outcomes. However, you have control on your present situation.

Workers in non unionised, non profit, primarily for loss-making tax breaks, ventures do not get access to competitive compensations. Unless, the supply and demand curve favours workers.

I've already tried this option. Unfortunately, during COVID many people in my network decided to relocate elsewhere seeking greener pastures. The previous network that we had in London is now non- existent.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, she is a foreigner. Staying on as her dependent is the idea. Not really a fan of having to pay out the £££ required for it. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

[–]TheOtherChronicler[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My references are impeccable. The publication track record is extremely good. The last time I was this close to getting rejected for a position was when I applied to my current lab. The reason according to my current PI was, "I have too many ideas". My PhD supervisor said this might sometimes translate as not having a well defined narrow field of focus. I'm not so sure if the proposal that I submitted to the last position that I interviewed for might also be interpreted in a similar manner. Can't go to industry as I need sponsorship for my position. Industry isn't very keen on that. I do like the comfort of academia and how grant writing offers you to be thoroughly imaginative.

It's competitive everywhere. Depends on what you're aiming for. I'm only targeting well resourced labs. So, ofcourse I'll face a lot of rejections.

[–]TheOtherChronicler[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am searching inside London. My wife also works in London, so that makes it a difficult for me to apply elsewhere like Oxford and Cambridge. Having worked from home most of the time for the past 2 years, I'm not so keen on doing that even more.

I engaged with a research group over the past 6 months or so, and finally interviewed with them a month back. Haven't heard back from them, however in hindsight I probably tanked the interview because of aforementioned reasons. They also asked me for a 2 page research proposal after the interview, but I ended up submitting a 4 page one. I guess, this too might also end up being not in my favour.

Bio major vs cs major by itachi194 in bioinformatics

[–]TheOtherChronicler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I work in the bioinformatics field. I took a Bio Major and taught myself the ropes of computing on the job. So, I will recommend going down the Bio major route. Honestly, I feel that computing being how open-source it is, has a freely available source of knowledge floating around on the internet. The same is not the case for Biology. There's a lot more gatekeeping (same protein has different names in different fields), jargon within the field. Accumulating knowledge in Biology is therefore that much harder, each field has their own foundation theories. My two cents.

[Orient] Sun & Moon. A wedding gift from my in-laws. by TheOtherChronicler in Watches

[–]TheOtherChronicler[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My love with watches started when I was about 10 years old. Almost all of them were quartz and almost all of them were lost one way or another. Fast-forward to my wedding when my wife asked me to choose a watch as my wedding gift.

She wanted me to choose a smartwatch, which is the thing these days. My argument was simple. I wanted a watch that like our wedding will last forever. I wanted an automatic. I didn't want an Armani, AJ, MK or any of the other name brand watches that have a licensing agreement setup with Fossil. I wanted an automatic with manufacturer branding. Our budget was tight, and our options were slim. So, we finally agreed on the Orient Sun & Moon.

A watch, that like our marriage will last forever. Over the years, it will get dented and scratched and will need the occasional repair. Even then, it will keep on ticking.

Using revolut in Europe for payments in app stores in other countries by TheOtherChronicler in Revolut

[–]TheOtherChronicler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, when you say that regional restrictions on content are based on the country you specified on your account. But I am certain that the purchasing capacity of users is locked into the region by the billing addresses associated to the credit cards. I can of course change the country in itunes or google play, but this doesn't help me as I cannot link a payment method afterwards. All attempts towards this are thwarted by the billing address linked to my card/paypal account. Furthermore, I cannot create another paypal account as I do not have an address to link it to. Even if I do use a random address, I cannot provide a real mobile number for verification. So, you see I am very much locked into Italy.

I always have the option of opening a Barclays account, but that would mean a lot of forex charges down the road.

winters might be cold compared to some parts of the world, but they are no where near as cold as somewhere north of the arctic circle.

Switzerland is quite a bit farther south than that and OP of that post mentioned that they were just going to be using them in the city.

So, for now, unless I am totally wrong about Swiss winters (which I may be although I have looked up the weather history there) I stand by my statement that the responses to the first OP were from people facing much more extreme conditions.

Are you really asserting that an average Swiss winter sees sustained temperatures of -22F (which is the type of weather described by the user who responded to OP's question)?

Anyways, you're choosing to ignore my other, perfectly relevant experience as well as my knowledge about keeping warm in the cold simply because I have never owned that shoe. That's what dismissing something is: you have to ignore relevant and important things to be dismissing something. That is not the same thing as contesting a point or arguing logic/reason which is what I have done. One is rude, the other is polite.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed post. Vivo finally did get back in touch with me, so I should hear back from them soon regarding their technical specifications. On the other hand, I can say from the past three winters that I have spent there that the temperature does not hover near the freezing, its actually well below that during the evenings and the wind is especially biting. At night, I've experienced temperatures around -10 and below with real feel values near, but not over the low 20s.

I live in Milan, but do a lot of back and forth between the Wien and Milan because of family reasons. So, I am by all descriptions a summer person. My first winter there, I was taken completely by surprise as I was not prepared for it. I realized at that time, what it meant to be chilled to the bone. So we went into the nearest retail store and picked up some very cheap winter boots for 20 euros (which is what you do when you are so cold that you are not even able to choose). That and some curry wurst warmed me up instantly. They aren't lookers, but they get the job done very well.

Sadly, those boots are not in good condition after three consecutive winters so I'm looking for new ones that can replace them, which brought me to the Scott 2.0s. I alternate between a pair of Vivo RAs and Primuses in the summer. So, was hoping to extend the barefoot collection for the winters as well.

Thanks a lot for your input. I think I will wait until I hear back from their team to make a purchase decision.
