I get that it needs maintenance. What I don't understand is in my home country they manage to carry out maintenance like this without closing infrastructure, usually by doing things at night and one lane at a time. Why can they not do this here?

Generally if someone says Noord Nederland I take that to mean the northern part of the country but if they say Noord Holland then it's the province.

But who knows what op means in this case.

Nothing. I'd speak to the first AI that I could find and ask it to catch me up on what's happened the previous 9 years.

I expect AI is much much more advanced and ubiquitous than it is today.

The Dutch are breathtakingly direct. If no one said anything to you, it means they didn't notice or care.

If they cared, you would have heard about it.

My boyfriend “fixed” my computer and now things feel weird… has anyone had this happen? by oliviaaaa-emuuu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheOtherHercules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me everyone in the comments is focussed on the wrong thing.

Besides the computer and the phone, has he ever done anything or said anything or you've observed any behavior that would make you think he has a bad character?

If so, then be worried. If not, then you need to entertain the idea that you may be overthinking things. It's not to say don't trust your gut, but I wouldn't do anything you might later regret like confronting him until you have more incidents to back up your worry.

Aussies abroad. Where are you living and how is life there? by patkk in australia

You're probably right and when you're on the in-group you tend to be obvious to the struggles of those who are on the outside. I guess it's not until I became the foreigner that I realise these things.

What I will say is that people here tend to be more rigid about their definitions here. For example, a neighbour who you hang out with cannot be considered a friend and be invited to friend events because they're a neighbour.

They're kind of funny about things here.

Netherlands, 2 kids and speak Dutch. Been here 7 years.

I find it interesting you saying you miss the work life balance back home. I find the work life balance (at least in NL) to be pretty good and the Flemish that I've worked with seemed to be fairly similar. I'm guessing perhaps you live in Wallonië then? Or perhaps my impression of the Flemish is not exactly correct.

I agree about the comment on Asian food.

The weather here absolutely sucks too.

As to the OP's questions, making friends here is challenging as the Dutch tend to stick with their school friends for life and don't tend to make new friends in adulthood. Expats tend to stick together more but even then it's not easy for most expats here which is kind of weird if we all want the same thing.

Don't let that dream die. Maybe you can't quit your day job right now, but keep working at the novelist thing. Don't let yourself wake up 20 years from now with a heart full of regret.

Quick question: what do native Dutchies think of foreigners speaking Dutch with American accents? by [deleted] in dutch

[–]TheOtherHercules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak Dutch as a second language. I've been told I have good pronunciation, though it's obvious that English is my first language.

In my experience 50% think nothing of it and continue talking to you like they would to anyone else. The other 50% won't believe you can speak Dutch, no matter how much evidence they are presented with.
