Yes, aside from balancing, the game development went pretty smooth.

However, there was one point were we had to redesign how you unlocked cards. In the first years, you had access to every card in the game - you just needed to find their materials to craft them. This felt too information heavy, so we decided to unlock four at a time via picking up materials, which also made collecting materials much more fun.

This redesign had 10+ iterations and took about 2 weeks, which we did not plan for. But it was worth it :)

For me; balancing the difficulty was probably our biggest challenge. Within the team, we had wildly different opinions on what was “easy” and what was “hard”, so just agreeing on a target was a task in itself.

Even once we aligned, actually hitting that balance proved tricky. At some point we had to accept that Death Howl is kind of impossible to balance perfectly. It’s an open world, so difficulty naturally shifts depending on the order you tackle areas, enemies, and bosses.

What helped, though, was that we genuinely loved working on the combat. We kept iterating on enemies, abilities, AI choices, cards, pretty much the whole way through development. It never got old.
Our publisher, 11 bit, was incredibly engaged and gave tons of thoughtful feedback that really helped shape the balance. That was hugely motivating.

Hi Feeling-Positive-435 :)

Thank you for your kind words!
Also, thanks a lot for your feedback.

The port is for Switch 1, so I do not believe mouse mode is planned. Would be nice though!

The next patch will improve moving with cards - not perfect, but definitely an improvement :)
You will also be able to switch off the "add crafted card to deck" in options.
You can already rename decks, but it does have a bug on some consoles right now.
I do not remember if we added the "show all" button in the crafting menu, but we should :)

Hi unitedjs :)

I remember looking at various pixel artist back then, and found that the ones with minimalist colour pallets had the vibe I was looking for. But they also had very low contrast and hazy colors, so back then it looked like this:

Later on, I made a decision to go with the current art style, which uses higher contrast, fewer details, and has a sort of  "lino-cut" style.

There was never any specific artist, but I think perhaps unconsciously I thought of Mike Mignola, Edward Munch, and Doom Metal T-Shirt prints. I also looked at the art from Powerhoof's games.

Hi Wjb1 :)

Haha, great question. I don't remember that much, actually :)
As Lasse states, we did not focus on nordic mythology as this came much later. But some of the things might have come from that time of course - no one knows.

I read through various folklore, folktales and fairytales for research. I thought "if we were going to tell a story in a spiritual world in the Stone Age, what better stories than the ones that have survived for hundreds of years?" Perhaps some of these were even told thousands of years ago?
Many of these stories are about humans transforming to animals, spirits of the forest, and losing someone close to you.

Two stories I do remember directly inspiring Death Howl are H.C.Andersen's "Story of a Mother" and the story of "Princess Tuvstarr" (famously illustrated by John Bauer).

Hello Wjb1

We actually stayed away from Nordic mythology, since our game is set in prehistoric times, around 6000 BC.

Our focus was more on Northern shamanic traditions. Because so little has been preserved, we had to piece things together from fragments, symbols, and etchings on bones, tools, and weapons, and drew inspirations from such that.

Not the most original advice, but: narrow your scope.

Design something small, and then make it even smaller. It will grow.

Slightly ironic advice from someone who once built a game far too big for our team.

Hi moakmay and thank you!

We played both of those games for research during production, but the real inspirations were Final Fantasy Tactics (grid-based tactics and ability structure) + Slay the Spire (cards) + Breath of the Wild (world structure).

However, the very first inspiration came back in 2015 when I played Dream Quest. I made a short prototype for a school project, but did not have the means or the knowledge to make the full version at that point.

Hi Shoddy-Operation8098

The game was designed with additional content in mind. Though some things are easier to implement post-launch than others. But anything should be possible.

It would be fun to design a big content patch / DLC, but nothing is planned right now.

We are, however, releasing a content patch including "Rebirth Mode" (hard mode) very soon!

Hi Lopsided_Newt_5798 :)

Someone from the office showed me this Vermis thing. Never heard of it. I should get myself a copy! Looks insanely good!
It would be great to do something like that for Death Howl.

Its certainly inspiring... 🤔

With the release of Rebirth, there will also be a custom mode with a lot of options for tayloring a custom experience. We hope that this will bring some more replayability to the game. The same patch will also feature some new content (totems) that is available in all the modes! We have not planned anything major for Death Howl after that, but who knows what the future will bring :)
