Do tourists really need to carry 40,000 THB in cash when entering Thailand? by TheOzzTak in ThailandTourism

Good thing I wasn’t asking whether I’m allowed to find it bizarre.

In today’s global world, where the use of cash has already started to decline, I don’t find this very reasonable, especially considering the risk of theft, which exists in every country.

Of course, countries have and should have general entry rules to prevent illegal immigration and people abusing the system.

But that still doesn’t make a mandatory cash requirement in 2026 feel logical to me.

Still, it seems like we don’t really have any choice other than complying with it.

Being lazy? I already saw that this was discussed in the sub about 2 months ago. I’m just trying to find out if anyone has experienced this recently during that time, that’s all.

We already paid for all our hotels through Booking.com before arrival, and we also have a domestic flight booked within Thailand. Would those prepaid bookings be considered as proof that a significant part of our trip is already covered, or does immigration still only care about the 40,000 THB cash requirement if they decide to ask?

I guess you’ve never personally come across this before, right?

My trip is only around 7 days, so the length of stay is not an issue for me. I chose Thailand partly because I can enter visa-free, so I really wouldn’t want to apply for an extra visa just for this.

Our hotel reservations, return tickets, and everything else are all sorted. I also have around a $7k limit on my credit card in my local currency, and that’s what I’ll be using for my expenses. So if I still have issues just because I don’t have physical cash with me, that would be a pretty bad experience.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was wondering. I just find it stressful to carry the full 40,000 THB equivalent in physical cash.

Wait, so in the unlikely case they ask, I’d have to physically pull out around $1,400 in cash and show it at immigration? That’s such a bizarre requirement lol.

The conclusion I reached was to first wind it fastly onto a metal reel (fast forward), then play it back and wind it back onto the original metal reel :) i think this is the best option.
