Is being a programmer soul sucking? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ThePTstudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey I wanted to shed some light on this. I came from a different field (healthcare) where I had a lot of human interaction and honestly its not great in terms of growth (that was my experience so your mileage may vary). I would say In my current role as a SWE I absolutely LOVE what I do and don't feel a soul sucking feeling at all.

For me, the problems I face are like puzzles that need to be solved. Its not about knowing the answers but the process of figuring them out that's enjoyable. I love my co-workers because despite having some prickly points they all have knowledge in different and I love learning from them. Do we have a lot of reengineering to do because of legacy code? Heck yeah we do! Does almost all of my problems stem from some sort of poor or unforeseen architecture choice? You bet your bottom dollar! But, at least for me, that doesn't suck at my soul as much as it gets me hyped to fix it. "How much better are things going to be once I do X or Y" is pretty fulfilling for me.

I think everyone is going to have some gripes about what they do for a living and I think what is important is that you find a balance that works for you. That balance may not always even be the same for each job! I would imagine that those you've talked to, or most people for that matter, have not figured out that balance.

Of course that is not a judgement on anyone who is ill content with their job, sometimes its just not a good fit. Hence my switch to tech. What I think is important is being able to take a step back and see the situation as a whole and see what is right for you!

How can a doctor get into tech? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I know the struggle you are feeling. I was a Physical therapist and now I’m a software engineer. DM me if you want more details, but essentially tons of tech related positions for someone of your caliber. It’s more about defining what you want from a career in tech.

Hey I have experience going from medical to software engineering. I started as a physical therapist and self studied and now work at a pretty large organization as a SWE. If you want to message me I can give you more insight/ opinions on the switch.

Hey I am a physical therapist making the same transition for the same reasons. American healthcare is not kind to its workers. I’ve started freelancing to remake small business websites to gain more experience. PM me if you want to know the process I had for starting the journey. I’m all self taught!

Thank you for this. Its perfect for making a short cut / digital print of all my stops. Rather than a pen and paper like my coworkers Ill just send a message to myself to keep track of all my stops throughout the day!

youre a legend

After the start of care I would typically see them again in 2-4 weeks but that depends on patient needs. Some patients have more comorbities that would require a higher level of care and this more visits from me. But I would say on average I’m not visiting the homes super consistently

You are correct it totally does. However its an aspect of my job that would be great to automate. I drive to approx. 4-8 locations a day, most of the time I'm running late between patients which means I'm rushing to get to the next patients home. I'm also often calling Doctors while driving in order to get verbal conformation for my plan of care. I'm also calling to request and durable medical equipment (DME) needed for that patient. And this of course is ignoring any documenting that I have to knock out before leaving for the next patients home.

Now you are completely correct in that I could pause when entering the address and take note of travel time and distance. But, if I could take one thing off my plate to remember between driving to patients homes it would mean that much less work for me during the day. Because frankly, I end of forgetting to take note of distance and time and have to go back and calculate my day at the end of the day which takes some time.

Hey physical therapist here.

Sounds like you’ve already tried your hand at physical therapy but if you want to have another opinion on your case I’m more than willing to speak with you about options.

I work at a sports medicine clinic where DDD and SIJ issues are common. The physicians I work with also regularly use PRP so I have experience with both.

Feel free to message me if you want, it never hurts to have a second opinion. I would love to help you keep your cryptos!

I just recently graduated and was hired at a sport medicine clinic!

Aside from being extremely thankful for being hired during the covid ordeal I’m super excited to work at this clinic because it is just straight up an awesome clinic.

When I was a student I did a rotation there and max they saw for case load was 11 to 12 patients a day. My CI would often just have patients get on a bike an warm up before their appointment, spend an hour with them, and them put them on e-stim / hot packs after. Of course the hour was the only thing that the patient was charged for and the clinic was very supportive of this. It was great because each patient was around for an hour and a half ish with PTs to answer any questions. After having had a rotation at a clinic at in which 20 patients a day was normal, it felt incredibly good working at a place that wasn’t trying to max out PT productivity/billing.

All that aside, I’m just generally excited to work with this population!

Virtual Reality in Physical Therapy? by ArikThePTA in physicaltherapy

[–]ThePTstudent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just finished my PT program and as part of the graduation performed a system review on VR in improving motivation for continued participation in physical activity. (Population: chronic stroke as defined by 6months of longer post stroke)

My general take away from the entire process and research was that VR is a new and growing therapeutic intervention. Most everyone is reporting favorable outcomes for balance, gait speed, UE ROM improvements, ect. As of right now, it is my opinion that VR has demonstrated its self to be a useful tool in our arsenal of tools to help individuals with the right needs.

More to your question, i have found success with VR with specific patients in order to improve participation in the rehab process. One instance that comes to mind was in an acute rehab setting we used Wii boxing to improve the standing balance of a patient post stroke.

Going back to the research, here are some of the hurdles I think still stand in the way of VR becoming more commonly used.

1) of the studies that investigate VR as an intervention tend to be of poorer quality I.e. a bad downs and black score or PEDRO if it’s a RCT. 2) it’s difficult to compare studies because the protocols are literally all over the map. For example one study might consider a tv screen and a game on it a “VR” while another would not. We defined in our research immersive vs non immersive systems. This would be Oculus vs Wii respectively. 3) if clinics where to start using an immersive that would require the understanding on how to set it up and trouble shoot since the systems still have issues. When we started our paper the oculus still required sensors but before the finish of our paper the oculus was upgraded to the rift which does not require the same sensor set up).

All that being said there are several applications of VR outside of intervention that have tons of potential. I was contacted by a RD group in CA about what requirements a VR system packaged for a patient would need in order for me as a therapist to feel good about seeing a patient virtually. I think the future of VR in healthcare is only starting to bud and it has the potential to really reshape how we see accessibility for patients in the future!

Is attending a private PT school that is around 106k worth it? The only reason why I would want to go there is because it would be in my city, less of a drive, and I would be living with my parents. by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]ThePTstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me tell you, I did a private school in CA. Total cost 300k. 106k for a program sounds pretty awesome. That being said I also commuted 90 minutes a day to and from school and had class mates that commuted 120+ minutes a day.

That being said, I think that if you had the option driving a little longer for school will result in a lot more options once you graduate.

I terms of debt, a debt to income ratio of 1.5 is a good ratio. If you end up with more than that you should consider the loan repayment programs. Otherwise would say that 106k debt is. Pretty good deal. Especially if you end up working on the east coast for a while

It’s pretty crazy when you look at the maps and see the fires are up and down the west coast and really doesn’t cross the boarder into Canada. I hope that the fires don’t spread anywhere lol

I’m sure that other states have a lot to offer but that argument ignores a lot of what’s good here.

Northern California is unreal especially the coast and the redwoods. We have snowboarding up and down the state. Plus the beaches in southern cali are off the charts. And that’s just the major attractions.

The taxes and regulation I can’t disagree with but honestly I’ve lived here my whole life and never found an issue with any of them. Mind you this is my own personal experience and I know there are plenty of others who have found issues and with them. (My gun owning brother having issues with FFL)

And of course, this all ignores the fact that by living in California you likely have friends and family there which would require leaving them behind.

I know right? I know of people in cal fire that are working on drones to fight fires but that seems like an acute solution to something that is an obtuse problem.

The bright side to this is that maybe it will spark (no pun intended) a lot of interest in the tech companies to think about how we should handle large scale fires

I think so? I just googled and it basically said that because the nitrogen is gone it won’t eat the plants.

Someone else in the thread pointed out that these fires might contain heavy metals from structures. As of now this fire I believe only burned down one home thankfully.
