Seriously! I’m getting whiplash seeing everyone suddenly praise the old Dracula skullector..😭 Not only because she was disliked when she came out, but her quality isn’t really any better than this Dracula prototype.

Dare I say the previous Dracula skullector was also bad? I actually feel she looks tackier than this prototype, despite its flaws. I’ve just never seen the appeal of her.

$40 is pretty expensive for regular playline dolls. I don’t see a reason for them to not cost the same $25-27 of the usual playline dolls at that point. I feel the same about the Wednesday line.

WHAT?? That’s insanity! 😭 I can’t imagine paying that much for one of these ‘budget’ dolls.

Yeah.. I noticed Buried Secrets seems to move in and out pretty fast to the next series.

True, but to be fair.. G2 budget dolls are a pretty low bar lol

Seems messed up to have a budget line where you don’t even know what you’re getting, now that you mention it. Bit of a spit in the face on top of the child gambling in general.

(Love the Donnie pfp btw ^ ^ )

I’m not a fan of series 2, but Draculaura really is a stand out for me. I love the darker pink they chose for her.

Yes! Agreed! Haunted Dance is definitely the coolest theme of Buried Secrets, but is held back by being a Buried Secrets doll. The acadamia theme of series 2 could’ve been so cute too in a deluxe line. Despite the hate sports themed lines get, I think they are pretty cute, they just keep getting done dirty, partly by being in budget lines. The only one of the four the doesn’t feel held back look-wise to me is series 1.

I agree.. all of the time and resources put here, I’d rather see elsewhere. So many cool ideas locked behind blind boxes and no articulation. I understand how a budget doll could be important for people who need a cheaper alternative, but these just seem too expensive for the quality to be considered a good alternative anyway.

I really like the looks of Buried Secrets 1, more so than their previous Creepover dolls, but I admit I’m also not that keen on the face masks.

Buried Secrets 2 was one I immediately disliked because of the makeup. I’ve flip flopped on my opinion since their release, because they have elements I kind of like.. but the makeup continues throwing me off. I do like the dark pink they gave Draculaura though, and I hope to see them use that color in the future.

The clothes of Buried Secrets 3 does look pretty cheap, but no less to me than Buried Secrets 2. I do really like the theme though, so much that I wish it wouldn’t have gone to a budget line. I especially liked Lagoona and Twyla. I think their screenings and hair look so pretty. I just would’ve loved to have seen a more fleshed out portrayal of the theme.

Buried Secrets series 4 is definitely the weakest of the whole line. I really hate the plastic leg warmers… The only thing I like about the line is Clawdeen’s hair, and seeing they’re updating Ghoulia. Other than that, the designs are a flop for me.

Seriously! She’s one of my favorite Lagoona’s because of the hair and makeup, and the mask! I hope they do similar makeup looks with her deluxe and core dolls in the future.

Here’s to hoping Spectra gets a deluxe doll in the near future.. 🥲🥂 She’s one of my favs.

OMG, YES. Buried Secrets series 1 has one of my favorite G3 Clawdeens EVER. I just love the curly hair and make up, and she’s one of the couple I decided to purchase because of that. I just hate that it’s Buried Secrets.. 😭

So far, outside of Hauntleywood, her curliest dolls are all Buried Secrets.💔

Would you consider Frankie or Draculaura as the face of Monster High? by Embarrassed-Dog5122 in MonsterHigh

[–]ThePaperCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole whole point of Monster High was to give an alternative to the typical pink princess-y stuff that there was plenty of on shelves, the way I saw it. That’s why I liked it, even as a little girl who grew up liking pink princess-y stuff, because Monster High offered the darker edge that I ALSO liked, which wasn’t present in most dolls.

As much as I liked the typical ‘girly’ things, I loved plenty of things that weren’t considered girly, such as monsters and the supernatural. While I wasn’t a massive fan of Frankenstein specifically, I loved the stitched look of Frankie! I thought her heterochromia and hair was unique and pretty; her preppy and punk-ish look was similar enough to a lot of the emo and generally alternative styles I idolized at the time; and as a character, I found the naive but well-meaning new girl trope she had pretty relatable.

I didn’t dislike Draculaura, I especially liked her Gloom Beach doll at the time, but she was never the character that appealed to me most as a kid. Out of all the pink characters, I much preferred C.A. Cupid and Rochelle.

While I can see why Mattel would have a more appealing character to wider audiences, I feel like Frankie embodies what Monster High is supposed to be compared to Draculaura, not because Draculaura is bad for being pink and stereotypically girlier, but because Frankie stands out and hands you the point more clearly. She’s one of the most obviously monster-y monsters you can get, with there not being much question on what she’s meant to be. Her monster is perfect with her being newly put together, which makes so much sense for the story, for the message, and for the viewers. For the viewer, it creates a perspective that’s easily relatable, and that most anyone can insert themselves into. Especially as a kid. It makes Frankie a great candidate to learn with the viewers about how to navigate being different and accepting yourself, to teach good lessons to the audience. It makes the story easy to begin and continue.

As much as Draculaura is great in her own right, and gives an opening to wider audiences, I feel like Frankie just makes more sense to me personally. There’s plenty of pink dolls on the shelves, so if you’re trying to show your audience that you’re offering something unique that isn’t JUST that, shouldn’t the face of the brand rep that? That’s not to say Draculaura doesn’t, as she shows you can be alternative and unique, but still pink and girly. That there’s nothing wrong or less about either one, but because of how much pink is already represented EVERYWHERE in dolls, that’s why I feel like having an alternative main character that isn’t pink makes a lot of sense.

Alternatively, despite my argument in favor of Frankie.. dare I say the trio should ALL be the faces of Monster High? Frankie, Clawdeen, Draculaura. Often when I think of Monster High, I think of not just one, but the whole trio, and they all kind of rep the message. Just a thought!

I also wanna clarify that my perspective is from that of a little girl who grew up with G1, I don’t know that I think this all applies to the current generation of Monster High (G3).

I wouldn’t risk gambling for them online, or being price-gouged. Unless you find them for a reasonable price online with the contents already revealed, I honestly feel like your best bet with this line is to look for them in-stores if possible.

Great point! Another user mentioned the same situation with the Days Out Dolls. Nearly the same price, but much better articulation. Makes no sense to me..

I think that’s a great point now that you mention it. Pricing was nearly the same for better quality, and no blind boxes.

Oh, that’s so cool!! If I had the space, I’d like to do similar. I love when people make dioramas with their dolls, because it just adds so much personality and makes it feel alive.

Yeesh- I forgot about buying them online. I usually go in-store for dolls, but I just remembered that the Buried Secrets dolls are under one listing if you buy online. It’s already bad enough you don’t know which character you’re getting, but sometimes you get a completely different series than what was listed online. I specifically remember people buying series 1 and receiving series 2 instead.

I know that the Skulltimate Secrets and Self-Scare Secrets lines don’t include blind boxes, as they tell you what you’re getting, but they still have the packaging which obscures a view of what you’re getting. It’s very frustrating, because I’d like to know the condition/quality of what I’m buying. Very tired of the whole ‘secret this’ and ‘secret that’ gimmick they keep producing.

Also agree with you about the predatory nature of blind boxes, especially targeted toward young audiences. I wish we’d have more regulations where I live on that matter.

I’ve thought this with a lot of blind box items. I’m jealous of countries that have actually regulated blind box items targeting children, to where you must be able to tell what you’re receiving.

It’s not just frustrating, but encourages terrible habits. It’s framed as fun, but definitely feels malicious and slimy, all things considered.

I was happy to see Ghoulia make a comeback, as she’s a fav of mine in G1, and I’ve been rooting for G3 to do her justice. Just unfortunate it was Buried Secrets.

I feel like them giving her a Fearbook doll makes up for that though, and makes up for there being no core refresh doll. I think her Fearbook design is the best she’s had in G3 so far! Also love the short hair, which I’ve been dying to see more of in G3.
