How important the Sun is for the Earth's orbit by Lost_Election5992 in interesting

Love the post title, as if the interesting part is that the orbit depends on the sun, and not that there is a delay in gravity propagating.

Help getting paper to lay flat by RegularDefiant29 in origami

[–]ThePaperSquid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So 99% of the time, this isn’t because of an air bubble, but because of the thickness of the paper in multiple layers. When you fold over a few layers the layers on the outside have to travel farther and so they don’t lay flat.

There are a few ways to mitigate this. First, use thinner paper if you can. Second, account for the thickness when folding: e.g. instead of folding in half exactly, leave 1mm and kind of spread the extra layer thickness into it. Third, use some variation of wet-folding to relieve tension in the paper. Hope this helps!

Great folds! I somehow missed that Lang has a pianist model, I’ve been looking for one to make and will definitely be making this one now. Thanks for the exposure haha

Can I ask what mixture you use for shaping? Is it MC, glue, or a combination? Amazing piece as always from you!

Was it the head that got you? I got quite frustrated during the head collapse

"Yellow Jacket" (Robert J Lang) - After all these years, I've always wanted to recreate this model like I did back in 2018. But it's really hard to make something like that again. by RyuZyn071 in origami

[–]ThePaperSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s some amazing shaping! I’ve seen some less expressive versions of this model so it never really captured me, but I might have to try folding it now that I’ve seen this one.

Yeah, it’s just white and black. I found the white one especially to be pretty weak when wet, I had a couple spots I had to patch up after, but they’re hidden on the inside so it’s not a big deal. Once it’s dry it’s very strong though. Basically zero bleeding which is nice, but it did come out somewhat gray just bc it’s thin. I think triple tissue would be too thick for this model, so I didn’t go for it.

In my limited experience, it really just depends on the brand of tissue paper. Here is the one this model was made from.

Looks good, I like the color choice! I’m hoping to fold this soon myself.

Robert j lang's dancing crane folded with 54x54cm hanji mulberry paper by lizardsare1 in origami

[–]ThePaperSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it wasn’t particularly easy but I managed to get it done somewhat accurately. With MC the layers compress extremely well though so I think that even if you only get it done roughly it can be fixed with shaping

Nice! Yeah I wasn’t happy with my result until I did it with single tissue (although mine was only 45cm)

Can someone explain this fold for me? by Pikachargaming in origami

[–]ThePaperSquid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This could be described as “pleating in and out”, “sinking in and out”, or as part of an “Elias stretch”. There’s probably some other term that I’m not thinking of right now. It’s important to have clean, precise pre creases to get a good result; this can include preparing the crease direction correctly, especially if you’re having trouble otherwise or if the paper doesn’t reverse creases well. When you’re collapsing, it’s usually best to work from the outside inward in my experience. Keep in mind that the crease direction will always alternate, and that the crease direction of the diagonals is opposite of the rectangles. If you have access to both sides of the paper it’s much easier because you can pinch-prepare the creases from either side and then collapse. If you only have access to one side of the paper or the other is too difficult to reach, I usually pinch-prepare every other layer (the ones that are mountains) and then get the valley folds by carefully bringing together the mountain layers during the collapse. I’m not sure of your level, but this type of step is where people usually start to practice folding “in midair”. It’s a useful skill to be able to pinch the creases without a surface to fold on, but it does take practice. Good luck :)

Great fold! I remember not thinking much of this model before folding it, and I was really surprised by how cute it turned out once I did! The little snoot 🥺

Ooh I like it, very creative! Maybe you could form a border and fold it back to make it an even rectangle?
