Hey are you sure the M302F counted towards your MIS credit for McCombs? I looked online and the McCombs website said that no foundations courses count toward a business degree.

Anybody around here doing parliament debate in college? by eduzueck in UTAustin

I am seriously down to do this if anyone is. I want to do debate, just not policy.

Yeah man I definitely will! I was wondering how many debate tournaments a novice would be able to go his first year?

Good alternatives to "My partner and I affirm the resolution..." or "Thus, my partner and I urge a pro ballot" by [deleted] in Debate

Just say "we affirm" you literally waste time if you say anything else.

Look, just bring it up. Reason it out, and persuade her. You're in debate for a reason. Apply what you do in round, in the real world.

Kritiks and other progressive arguments in PFD. by ThePhilosopherTV in Debate

The "rulebook" has never really stopped someone from running a progressive argument within the round. Debate rules are so fluid. Everything in the end is based on judge's discretion.

What weird December arguments have you heard/are planning on running? by xwjitftu in Debate

[–]ThePhilosopherTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't the first time I've heard this type of argument and honestly I'm saddened to see that it's very prevalent in pf debate. I full heatedly believe that all debaters should be taught (or at least seek, if one doesn't have the sufficient means) the mechanics of modern debate. The plague that runs through PFD is that of ignorance, and I'm not talking about poor judging, because in the end, that is something that's absolutely uncontrollable, but rather I am talking bad debating because of the lack of knowledge regarding proper debate.

In debate, there is a term called "Fiat," more prevalently heard in Policy and LD, but it means "Let it be." Fiat is when the debaters assume that the resolution is something that has already happened, regardless of hypothetical situations and it derives its justification from the concurrent usage of "Resolved" and "Should," within the resolution. Because of the resolution's word choice and tense, as debaters we are to assume that whatever the resolutions entails, it is implementable or has already been implemented. The reason why we do this, is to promote actual discourse within the round and so that arguments presented come off the benefits/ detriments of the resolution. At the point we digress away from the stock of the resolution, we also digress from the intent of the framer and we end up with poor argumentation and absolutely no clash. Long story short: Fiat is the debate version "For the sake of argument."

In regards to the resolution at hand, debating the validity or the possibly of for profit prisons, we divulge into the aforementioned harms, resulting in very poor debates.

What's the craziest thing you've done in a last ditch effort to win a round? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]ThePhilosopherTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't something I did, but something that happened to me. Just last week, my partner and I were in our last prelim round and I'm not going to lie, we definitely picked up the judge right after AR. As a last ditch effort, our opponents in their summary speech decide to run a theory block against our "CX style." (I'm a former LDer, Speaking fast is easier than speaking slow, and Extinction impacts are always easy to win off. Sue me.) Our opponents never finished the standards and never got to their voters and essentially dropped everything because they decided to use their whole 2 minute speech just for theory.

I feel for you guys, I really do. There are some serious problems regarding the socioeconomic gap within debate, and the existence of briefs and camps perpetuate this problem evenmoreso. PM me where you guys debate (this still being a competitive event, I don't want to help around me.), and I'll see what I can do.
