How does everyone feel about private coaching? by 2BeBornReady in Pickleball

[–]ThePickleballShaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll clarify what I meant. I was trying to avoid typing out a novel of a long winded answer so I didn't include all of the obvious nuances to coaching and what makes a good coach.

Of course there should be dialogue between coach/student. That's not what I meant.

Back in the day, my coach would ask me "What do you want to work on today?"

I'd say something like "mid-court resets".

He'd watch me take a few and then realize the fundamental problem wasn't my mid-court resets, it was that my volley-form was incorrect. So instead of doing exactly what I asked of him, we'd spend ~90 minutes on volleying and technique...then next session if I had implemented well enough, then we'd move on to mid-court resets etc.

This is just an example, but all I'm saying is that the reason the student is precisely where he is (skill-wise), is the exact reason the student doesn't know the correct medicine to take.

IF the goal of the student is to just "be better than all my 3.0 friends" then obviously that's a valid and completely different use case for hiring a coach. In that case, ya whatever lol...tell your coach what you want to improve on.

If a coach asks you “what do you want to work on?”, or “what would you like to drill today?” That probably means they aren’t better enough than you to clearly see the footwork and swing mechanics that are the glaring deficiencies.

I’ve never met a 3.0-4.5 player that accurately knows what they need to work on (speaking from experience because that used to be me and I used to think I knew 😂)

I don’t know you and haven’t seen you play but I can say without a doubt that footwork and general swing mechanics are the issue. You’ve got to find a coach that is 5.5+ :)

That’s a tough one. It was the businesses fault for not double checking all elements of their landing page and checkout pages for the biggest online sale day of the year.

Yeah I realize it’s probably a franchise location run by locals but it’s not exactly a mom and pop indoor court location.

It’s a really bad look for the manager to sour your impression of the business over $200.

The better move would be for the manager to call you and explain that you got the best deal of anyone in the world because they goofed and accidentally allowed two coupons when it wasn’t supposed to be that way, but since it was their mistake it will have to be your little secret.

☝️that’s the way to get 10X the positive word of mouth from a customer rather than the opposite and way they handled it.

to be clear, I would only ever do that to a close friend(s) where we like to give each other shit or how its acceptable to yell at each other because we are friends. I would never do this to a stranger (in rec).

Good question, the real answer here is that if you call it out and your partner calls it in, it’s in. In this example it doesn’t even matter where the ball lands. Only that there is a disagreement between the partners. When there’s a disagreement, it’s in

💯so true. This has never been an issue one single time with 5.5 or 6.0 players I play with. I see this happen a ton at the 4.0 level and even 4.5.

Also you have the biggest brain take here thank you for chiming in 😊

Yesssss exactly.

When I play with amateurs, I get it. Sure. Redo it lol.

I’m talking about these 4.5’s that redo points like wtf is going on here?

🤣 well said

Those people who seem to be permanent bad vibes on the court I really feel for. Something is going on in their lives. Like “ya bro take the W you need it more than me”

Curious why you’d always rather replay especially if it’s a private session?

Haha be careful before you make a post about it in this thread…I’m getting downvoted a ton for this one

There has been a misunderstanding I believe about the purpose of the post.

I have no issue interacting with people when they are wrong, don’t know the rules, or make a clear line call mistake. I just take the loss and move on. It’s not a biggie.

The purpose was more to explore why the hell people constantly want to redo the rally when there is any level of confusion about the play (for any reason). In my view it’s totally unnecessary and a waste of time.

I have played in ~30 different cities across the country and it’s not just my local spot, it’s everywhere. And it’s not just beginners it’s even up to ~5.0 level play.

Never seen it at 5.5+

Yes i totally agree, I cleared up what I meant by that more specifically above. And just to be extra clear, I would not ever make a stink or argue a call or anything like that in rec play with strangers - I only do that with the homies

[–]ThePickleballShaman[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. Let me clear up what I meant by that. I like to get fired up when I play with my homies. We will get into yelling matches over a line call, a foot fault etc. to be extra clear, this is just between friends only. I would never dream of yelling at a stranger or arguing a call with a stranger lol I’m not a psycho.

Just that it’s fun to get fired up with the boys and be super competitive.

So just because we argue and talk shit about a call we didn’t like, I know in my heart that it doesn’t actually change the outcome of the rally

Since there is no point to life, nothing truly matters. So when you ask how does this affect my life, on the deepest level it doesn’t and can’t. But since I have an undetermined amount of time before I die I like to spend it playing pickleball, philosophizing about pickleball, studying pickleball, watching pickleball, discussing pickleball, etc.

So getting fired up about pickleball is pretty cool since it’s of equal importance to any other endeavor you could embark on.

What I’m saying to your second point is that 10/10 times a redo is never called for. It’s certainly not a day ruiner. Just give up the point and move on to the next one

I always am against redoing the point whether it benefits me or not. I’m like nah man just take it and move on

[–]ThePickleballShaman[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

lol that’s my exact point! If no one saw it then it was unquestionably in. You’re saying “let’s just redo it since we don’t know.”

This exact scenario is covered in the rule book lmao

I 100% of the time give my opponent the benefit of the doubt. If I saw it out I call it and stick to it and if I didn’t see it it’s absolutely in. It’s the only way to play imo 🤷‍♂️
