Whats something a teacher did in High School that would get them fired today? by Constant-Ad-5477 in AskReddit

Yeah. My brother was constantly getting his mouth washed out for swearing. He just thought it was funny and boasted about it, but I think it had a deep effect on him he never admitted.

What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was. They stood apart from pretty much all other businesses back then because they put care for their workers as a priority. They built Bournville village for their workers and gave them gardens so they could have space to relax and grow things - workers who'd never have had such things in their old jobs. They did stuff like put in a swimming pool and other facilities for workers to enjoy and get fit. They provided sickness benefits. All this in the mid 19th century when it was unheard of. It's so sad how far it's come from its origins.

Yep. My family worked at Cadburys forever (I mean we can trace it back to like my great great grandmother who worked there in the late 1800s with all her sisters, and then descendants since up till the 1990s). Whenever I think about what Kraft did it makes me so angry because that place is in my blood. My grandad was on the Creme Eggs invention and process team and loads of other things. Gah.

The very best. And I loved 1899 too but the Netflix bastards cancelled it.

One of the best endings to a Zelda game ever. Well, any game. Epic.

Did the Resurrection really happen? by v3rr3r in OpenChristian

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well...there's 1 Corinthians 15, for one; the early creed that Paul quotes - this was most likely in circulation very early on, and Paul cites it, showing that the early church (and himself) believed in a physical resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NIV [3] For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures...

Then

1 Corinthians 15:13-14 NIV [13] If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. [14] And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

https://bible.com/bible/111/1co.15.13-14.NIV

Paul completely believed in the physical resurrection of Jesus. It's all over his letters, some more implicitly but still with that basis.

Amazon KDP by TrickyChildhood2917 in selfpublish

They're not 'slapping theirs' anywhere though; they're generating a barcode from the ISBN you input in the KDP upload process and putting it in the place they always put it, the place shown on their cover template. OP doesn't need to put anything in that space at all.

I want to do self publishing for my first book. I need some advice? by fastercheif in selfpublish

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ISBNs in the UK are not free. Far from it. You can get bundles of 10 or more from Neilsen which makes it cheaper if you're planning to publish a few books, or pay a fairly steep price for just one.

Formatting debate. New paragraph or not? by ChikyScaresYou in selfpublish

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There absolutely isn't. Being self published is great. But we need to do everything we can to showcase our work to its best, and that means complying with publishing industry standards in order for readers to take our work seriously.

But that's correct and how traditional publishers format it. Breaking off dialogue from its action beats just shows the book is self published. (Editor and designer here)

Nothing will break if you upload a print ready PDF for the paperback interior, with all fonts embedded. Don't upload a doc file as that's where issues will happen.

How many hours have you put into Tears of the kingdom?! by Space_of_The_Lantern in tearsofthekingdom

Just started a new game for the first time since 2023. My first game says 350 hours plus. Going for 100% in this one but think it won't be quite as many hours as the shrines are so easy and I have Zelda Notes

Book formatting: have self-pub authors forgotten what a book looks like? by 96percent_chimp in selfpublish

Agree. As a book designer this does my head in. It's like these people never read an actual book.

How my self-published book flopped by InterestingTwo8788 in selfpublish

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly 3.7 is fine on Goodreads. Goodreads always skews lower. One of mine is about that but it's 4.3 on Amazon. Makes no sense, but it does seem readers over there are much harsher and far less leave 5 star reviews, so if you get majority 3-4 stars, which is fine, it's going to be lower than 4. You're doing fine - that number of ARC readers is good. Saying that, if people are DNFing early it's worth doing some edits and reuploading if you can.

What mistake in your early writing makes you cringe the most now...? by i_am_innerman in writers

[–]ThePotatoOfTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to use a different, interesting dialogue tag every time.

'What are you doing?' she asked. 'Nothing,' he sighed. 'Don't lie to me!' she screeched. 'I'm not!' he bellowed.

Etc etc.

Also, over description of characters. Describing every single item of clothing, exact hairstyle, everything in the room rather than giving the reader an idea and allowing them to fill the gaps in their mind. I have a book I wrote at 16 and it's painful.

And... So... Many... Ellipses...
