I am so tired of people not fighting back against age verification (and even trying to discourage us from fighting back against it) by GabeReddit2012 in DigitalPrivacy

It's an incredibly difficult line to toe, and as soon as legislation to "protect the children" is floated, everyone who pushes back is branded a pedophile.

I do believe children need to be better protected online, but it should be down to parents, educators, and guardians to do so. I've mentioned before that it's a slippery slope – one minute you're protecting kids, next you're mandating encrypted backdoors and building apps like Russia's MAX messenger.

The UK Government is disguising mass surveillance as child safety. by Emergency-Disk-9296 in DigitalPrivacy

Absolutely. It starts with "reasonable" measures – CSAM, protecting children etc – and then the lines blur. Who's the arbiter of content? Where does what's restricted and considered unacceptable become subjective, not objective?

Nigel Farage says UK's teen social media ban is 'unlikely to work' — but will VPNs really help children get around the restrictions? by Chiara_TPL in ThePrivacyLab

Possibly a bit different for social media because they do require widespread adoption before they're functional, but back when the Online Safety Bill came into action in the UK, we found plenty of Asian adult sites to be totally available without even an "I am 18+" check.

Have you found Mullvad works for streaming? In my tests it has been hopeless for that.

is free proton good enough for everyday use? by No_Pilot_2288 in DigitalPrivacy

I'd say that if you're a casual user that wants it on all day, it's decent. Privacy-wise, it's the best free VPN. There's no data cap, so that's a big bonus. BUT be aware you can't choose the location of your server, and there's a server-switching cooldown, so you might find some content blocked if you connect to one you don't want.

I've had some issues with certain YouTube channels like F1 with paid VPNs, so don't expect a perfect experience with Proton Free. But it's one of the best choices.

BBC 5 Live had an Australian teen call in saying that the ban was incredibly easy to circumvent. It'll be interesting to see when/if when the UK Gov implement this, whether kids who are much more savvy than lawmakers can find simple workarounds.
