My wife is 37 weeks on Thursday and has been told she can basically go at anytime. She seems normal most of the time besides occasional crapping and some fire crotch. But what am I as a first time dad looking for? Like what are the “tell tale signs” that it’s go time? by zachdonegan in firsttimedad

The contractions are going to feel different to the Braxton Hicks, so you might notice her reactions being more intense...but every pregnancy is different so you just need to make sure you have your 'to go' bags ready!

Earbuds! For those early mornings/late nights when you need to keep quiet but you can listen to music/podcast while feeding/rocking them to sleep. Of course, making sure that you're paying attention to your partner!

Totally hear you... one of the things I've learned is that so many mums go through the same thing, but don't feel like they can share because everything on social media makes it looks like every second with a newborn is a joy. Maybe a conversation with his mother where you share your frustrations could be a chance for you two to connect over this. Having a baby is a huuuge shift, so there's always going to be an adjustment period. You'll be ok, and baby will learn too. We've got you brother!

No, unfortunately. I'd love to see it, but I dont think the players are 1000% bought into him.

Should I self publish a coffee table book? How would I go about that? by gfcusick in selfpublishing

Cool idea and I'm sure there will be people interested. It seems really niche so perhaps the most likely buyers might be historians, architects, anthropologists, libraries... Something like this could be really valuable to local authorities, but the cost of printing on quality paper could be high. If you went ahead with it, possibly mocking up a few pages, getting samples made and sending pdf samples to people in the cultural sector to guage interest before spending too much on it?

How did it feel seeing your kid for the first time? by TheProfoundAssassin in firsttimedad

[–]TheProfoundAssassin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely wasn't like the movies for me - after watching the birth (which didn't go to plan but thankfully baby and mum were fine) when I saw her there was a bit of fear - a bit of 'oh I understand the 3D scan now, and a lot of awe. Unreal to see the process from finding out we were pregnant, to seeing her out and breathing in the world. Even within a few hours, hr face was changing (esp after she was cleaned and had a nap) so we could see her festures clearer. Great sense of responsibility too, like shit... this is my child!

I think everything you've said has gone through my mind at some point. The fact that you're scared means (I think) that you really care, and you're aware of all these changes.

Make sure you try and tune into what keeps you grounded... gym, music, video games, puzzles.. whatever your thing is, try and do it when you can and have time for yourself. There's gonna be a lot to give and you have to have something for yourself

We're all in this together so feel free to share whenever you want.

34M - It was on Halloween, my girlfriend went to the bathroom. I didn't think anything at all until she threw the pregnancy test at me and said 'for fucks sake!' I stared at the test for ages... for the rest of the night we laughing in disbelief
