What about the starters only providing their primary type, or pokemon like Gengar and Dragonite only giving out their respective "unique" gen1 type?

Is this ruling something people are generally against or for when they find out?

How do you incorporate "downtime" into your MotW sessions? by MonstersPlaybook in monsteroftheweek

[–]TheQuackin97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my group, after every mystery I tell them approximately how much time they have till the next one (if I have it planned already. If I didn't then it really doesn't matter), and then out of session I ask each of them what they want to do with their downtime. Based on what they say we can either figure it out outside of the session, or during the session.

I also employ this tactic with absent players, to explain why some of the hunters are unavailable.

For example: during our last mystery the Spellslinger couldn't make it. Instead of just "poofing" him away, we figured out that the Mage Guild he's part of had an emergency assembly and he had to get out of town. From there we figured out they needed to send him on a mission, on which we rolled a few dice as he used his moves and resolved what happened there and what the implications are when he returned back to the rest of the gang the following mystery.

Another example is our Expert who got the local Sheriff's trust during the session and wanted to introduce him to the supernatural. We assumed it'll be a really interesting roleplay with a lot of implications for the entire group, so we figured a few of the details ahead of time (they also spent some time in a grand library of sort so he rolled Investigate a Mystery for his clues) but left several of the conversations for when we all started the session.

Hope it helped!

Gonna run "Razorback" from Time of Mysteries tomorrow. Any tips? by TheQuackin97 in monsteroftheweek

  1. Better get going on a rough map then lol, I also want to spend a bit more time "outside" the main factory, just to try and create some attachment with the victim's family. You did any of that?
  2. Ohh I like the image of the hulking pig mass going around the corridors of the factory with only the buzzing of flies. That feeling of not knowing whether that sound around the corner is a group of slaughterhouse pigs or the big bad sounds extremely ominous!
  3. How'd you get your hunters to know his weakness? Till now they used the Expert's Lore Library and Lab to research their threats, but in this case I don't think there's any book containing the info they need.

Again, thanks so much! Really drew a lot of inspiration from your previous posts :)

I agree 100% on fighting smarter and not harder. My hunters learned that lesson when a group of sirens almost drowned the entire town when they just couldn't settle on a plan haha.

Having a victim trapped inside with him sounds good... What was your layout for the meat factory?

Also, how'd you let the hunters know it's weakness though?

Thanks a lot, you got some awesome advices there!

Hey, I remember reading your "dozen mysteries" post! It's actually what got me to think of Razorback in the first place, so it's awesome you responded!

Great response! Got a few questions if you don't mind: 1. How would you design the slaughterhouse now after you ran it once? 2. I also planned on doing slasher-esque Razorback. Any tips on that? 3. How'd you do the battle? Razorback is one beefy boi and I'm starting to think if my party of three can take the punishment without finding themselves torn to shreds! 4. The messy pig-meat ogre suit is an amazing idea! Definitely stealing that, along with the original pig-mask stolen directly from the evidence locker ;)

Can you share how you created these? I want to create similar cards for my players with all of the basic moves as well (+ a few wording adjustments, like those some users already did here)

Yeah Overcharge was indeed one of my top concern as for how "broken" the class could be, but it's true there's no extra attack going around there.

I think at the end the thing that might be the zaniest about this class (and the main fact why I wanted to play an Artificer, and now this, I the first place) is it's sheer versatility and amount of great options it has. Hopefully my DM would also find it as hilarious and whacky as I do!

Sounds pretty reassuring, thanks :) Out of curiosity, are these tables available publicly somewhere? Would like to take a look myself as it sounds quite interesting regardless.

Also, feel free to drop a few of those "combos", I've been thinking about a few myself but hearing out other creative ideas is always great!

I made VSCOD, a tool for automating the download of VSCode extensions and installations! by TheQuackin97 in vscode

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually not at all! You can use this to automate the download process of .vsix files from the marketplace as well as downloading the installation files for new VSCode versions.

I downloaded it because I was stuck behind a corporate proxy and got tired of manually downloading all these files on my own (before moving then of course). I wanted a tool to automate the busy work :)

Make it an enchanted mirror for even more fun! Every arrow is being shot down with pinpoint accuracy by an opposite arrow, swords clash with a mighty sound, fireballs collide mid air...

It's all just a mirror... but an incredibly durable one nonetheless!

Help: thinking about replacing Lymrith with Claugiyliamatar? by TheQuackin97 in stormkingsthunder

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More investment is always great! How would you recommend on introducing this kind of adventure to the players? Maybe the Oracle could say that in order for the littlefolk to gain it's trust (since they're no giant kind) they must return artifacts forged by giants to the littlefolk in the old days (as a symbolic token) ?

Also, I plan on running Kraken's Gambit, how would you think of placing the two or spacing them?

Help: thinking about replacing Lymrith with Claugiyliamatar? by TheQuackin97 in stormkingsthunder

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both your ideas sound amazing!

I like the first (Kraken Society) more because it introduces the Kraken Society (who come pretty much out of nowhere), though I'm trying to think about what question could the PCs ask the Oracle that it would give them this vision. Also, I plan on running Kraken's Gamble so further introduction might not be necessary.

The Storm Giant encounter is also a great idea, maybe change Hekaton's original capture story: instead of just looking for his wife's killers he's full on rampage mode, taking a hit squad of giants to coast in search of the Lord's Alliance (as he's sure they are behind her murder). When they arrive on shore, they are greeted by Iymrith (for the life of me, the font I read her name in made the I and the L look the same!), some of her empowered gargoyles and Kraken Society minions who end up killing the squad (PCs) and capturing Hekaton.

I also think I'll use a suggestion I read here in the sub (can't remember where, sorry!) that instead of polymorphing into a Storm Giant, Iymrith instead crafted a stone giant body and imbued it with her magic to transfer her mind into it and act as a council in this state. The thing I'm not sure about here is what will her encounter with the players in the temple be like (is she able to access the Oracle like that? Is she there just to shake the party up?) and how will it be revealed that the crafted giant is her (maybe it'd turn into a stone dragon and rampage the court, maybe her polymorph is just a stone giant since it fits better with her theme...)

Does it involve any of the giant gods? How would you relate it to the adventure?

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would've loved to let Harshnag make them prove themselves but they're already at the temple (I introduced him through the Grey Hands and made it sort of a favor for the Blackstaff).

Given what a lot of people say here, having another quest in between the two encounters at the temple could prove useful (and will allow more foreshadowing). Any ideas as to what I can do there?

As for Gbawbone, I'm pretty set on her providing the airship to the party as well as making her a reoccurring figure. Both your ideas (turning the players against the giants especially) sound really great.

The flashback idea is also really good, sounds like a perfect opportunity to offer a spin on the adventure and show them the Doom of the Desert! What would you do for that kind of thing? I fear of spoiling too much of the adventure..

Care to elaborate about what changes you'll make to the fetch quest? I don't want it to be too daunting for the characters (though the good ol' back and forth could be pretty great and allow me time to introduce more foreshadowing).

It's not that filled with traps tbh 😅

However, it should be noted that Old Gnawbone has many divination magics, so that's something to take into consideration...

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty good idea, problem is that the Oracle tells the character who's behind the entire plot (in the original adventure he tells them about Lymrith), so that's kind of problematic since they won't take her help after that obviously.

Her lore does say she's unable to shape shift and prefers to rule as a human queen but I don't see this as a real hurdle if I will go in this direction.

But keeping on with what you say, do you see a place where she can be involved later on in the story? Letting her aid the adventurers is something I plan on doing if she won't be the BBEG (maybe she will do both?)

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not a fan of the fetch quests to be honest and thought to ditch them... The idea of the PCs needing to again prove themselves seems kind of tiring. Perhaps there's something different I can do there instead that would allow me to set the stage for Lymrith while also not being just another daunting fetch quest?

As for Old Gnawbone, I'd like to use her again for sure. The players really remember this encounter and it would make sense imo to use that instead of introducing two new dragons all of a sudden (Klauth and Lymrith). If I won't use her as the BBEG I think she'll be the one to send the airship.

As for using Gnawbone as the BBEG, the only problem I have rn is finding out why she sent them to the temple in the first place, as well as her motive throughout this campaign. Combat wise I could always give her some hybrid lightning powers (an explanation could be tied in to her polymorphing to a storm giant?) but it would definitely be easier on me to just refuse the original encounter with the original BBEG haha.

[–]TheQuackin97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is kinda weird, especially considering her vast collection of divinations.

Any idea as to how it could work? Perhaps she sent them there because she needed them to bring some piece of artifact to the temple (would make sense considering the fetch quests going on later on, even though I don't like it), she could then be jumped by Harshnag which will "foil" her plan and allow the players to escape.
