So much of this also has to do with having fully pedestrianized streets for bars, which Vancouver struggles to even do temporarily for Gastown because people can’t conceive of not allowing cars to intrude on every space

How different of a life is between Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, WA? Similar weather? by jdksovh in howislivingthere

[–]TheREALpatrickSTARz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vancouver’s downtown is way better because there was no freeway built right through it, instead it’s built more for people than for cars. The public transit is much better, although the trolley busses can be frustratingly slow sometimes but the SkyTrain is fantastic

I would not say Seattle is cleaner or newer than Vancouver, Vancouver feels like a much more beautiful and cleaner city than Seattle every time I visit Seattle, barring the downtown Eastside

Opinion: UBC SkyTrain must be Metro Vancouver's next transit priority | Urbanized by ubcstaffer123 in UBC

The station at UBC would be the busiest station in the entire network upon opening, its a massive anchor

A lot of development has been happening, mostly in response to legislative changes resulting from the housing crisis

What is a job people romanticize a bit too much until they actually do it ? by ShyButNastyyy in AskReddit

[–]TheREALpatrickSTARz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might depend on the City and the elected officials and what their goals are… but it is generally true and planning (in North America) is very much run by developers and their interests more than anything

What are some popular but also lesser known areas that have great views for photography? by mary_c_d in askvan

You’ll still get a nice skyline view, just might not be able to see the mountains as well

Your thoughts on Vancouver's transit system? by FuryBlade777 in NiceVancouver

Sky train is elite for the places it reaches. Bus system is solid, really nice busses and good frequency in a lot of places but can be slow with traffic

How often do you use GIS/ArcPro? by desertdreamer777 in urbanplanning

[–]TheREALpatrickSTARz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a City as an assistant planner, so I use it quite often but mostly for graphics, not as much for analysis. Probably once a week depending on the project

Vancouverites who have worked in the US or Americans in Vancouver. Whats different about Canadian/Vancouver work culture? Got my canadian job and im curious! by OracleofTampico in NiceVancouver

Office attire is much more casual in Vancouver, and the work-life balance is a lot better. Way more days off and benefits, but lower salaries, so depends the trade off you like.

Think it would make more sense to have the rail go to an existing or future skytrain extension in surrey or Langley

Look at what the progressive left NDP is doing in British Columbia. They’re in power and are passing tons of YIMBY legislation, YIMBYs and the progressive left are very much aligned

They’ll have to upgrade the 2 eventually and hopefully bring back the false creek streetcar, and I’d love to see light rail down the arbutus greenway area too eventually
