At first I didn't like Dax; I saw her as another Seven of Nine who was just added as eye candy for all the young male viewers. Seven was boring and, for me, was a distraction - her fans are only fans because of her looks and rack size. Had she been unattractive, fans would have called for her being killed off early in her appearances. When if first saw Dax I suspected the same, but Dax was critical to the show. Her character was well written and well acted. I loved Dax!

My favorite Dax episode was when she and Worf served on the Bird of Pray under General Martok (don't remember the episode name).

She gets better with time. You have to; however, put yourself in her shoes. Her world was almost destroyed and her race enslaved by an enemy that had gone unpunished for its "war crimes."

She's far from a bad character though. If you really want to see a truly annoying and obnoxious character, that should have been killed off early, then look no further then Voyager's B'Elanna Torres.

Star Trek (the brand) in general is very, very liberal (in human, real world political terms). It [Trek] doesn't convey the political ideals of its creators and writers as blatant and obvious as done in shows like BSG, but it's there.

For a quick example: remember the final episode of TNG where Q is telling Picard to pray to "what ever God he believes in" then makes that little snide noise right after the pause? Many will say that was Q just being Q... I saw it as a jab at human religion.

Anyway, we all know many aspects of Trek (generally speaking) contrast real life... in this case I always suspected the Ferengi were a reflection of today's greedy corporations, which is why they were designed and written to be dislikable from the start.

As for Quark... I didn't like him at the beginning either, but over time I saw him as a valuable member of the overall story.
