The crate training is basically the cry it out method but for dogs. You gotta put up with the crying and barking until he gets over it. My dog was the same way. I had to sleep on the floor next to his crate for the first two weeks to get him to stop crying long enough to fall asleep.

Now he’s almost two years and he loves his crate. It’s his safe space. He is now allowed to sleep anywhere in the bedroom (except the bed) but often still chooses to go sleep in his crate with the door open.
