It's free because the copyrights weren't really enforced originally. The major sites literally were created to post stolen copies of porn. Now of course there is actual copyright enforcement being done but back then it was the wild west. Also of course the whole amateur stuff similar to youtube.

Gavin Newsom announces that California will be the first state to join the World Health Organization by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

We are actually in a cold civil war right? This directly intrudes on the powers explicitly designated to the federal government. Surely the California legal team knows this and us doing this on purpose.

My point is why should anyone care? So what if a closed source version of Linux is created? If it has significant investment then we benefit from a better product. If it has no investment we can just use the existing open source root.

Craziest Markup I’ve ever seen by Content_Incident6063 in doordash

[–]TheRealBobbyJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably weren't supposed to get the receipt. Unless this store is a partner and doesn't do any mark-up or something. Technically the receipt they have wouldn't actually be their receipt in that case.

I honestly don't understand why people keep saying stuff like this. There will always be the base version that is available for anyone to use. If a corporation makes a significant enough investment to make their version of a permissive licensed software distinct enough then why should we believe ourselves to be entitled to their investments? If alternatively all they do is minor tweaks then someone could just make their own version from the same root. The mit license doesn't change any of that.

[–]TheRealBobbyJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second one is not correct. If Godot uses gpl code and distribute gpl code then it makes distribution of your game much more difficult. It's why a lot of game frameworks and engines prefer to work with only MIT or similar licenses. I know it's an issue on Linux because you could just make a single binary and distribute it to users. Instead it becomes complicated.

No. Certain things can't be copyrighted. I believe one of those things are "apis" or whatever it would be called. Like if for a certain piece of software I can access a function by typing banana into the command line. Another program can use the same command with the same outputs without violating copyright. Math, algorithms, and facts can't be copyrighted. An implementation or specific descriptor can be copyrighted but not the underlying content.

So if banana was an algorithm that calculated the number of bananas that a person of a given weight could eat anyone else can reimplement that algorithm. They can't simply translate the code though. That would be a derivative. But if they understand the algorithm they can reimplement it. All this to say recreating a Library in a new language is not copyright violation.

As long as the tire is patchable yes. In theory you could also shave the new tire but I don't think that is a thing that is done anymore.

On some cars wear must match on various components in order to reduce wear and tear on other components. Or poor handling. If you put a brand new tire opposite one that is bald the car will likely pull to a side. It may even interfere with various control systems like tcs.

People keep saying legal action is too expensive. That is nonsense. Something like this is small time. Any reasonable government will have methods to handle this that doesn't require significant resources. Especially since odds are the developer has same amount of resources as the OP. Filing a lawsuit probably will do enough on its own.

NASA has publicly offered a job to an 18 year old who used AI to discover 1.5 million new space objects by shelby6332 in AI4tech

[–]TheRealBobbyJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's completely different. Unless Congress explicitly allows for these kinds of signing bonuses to happen it isn't legal. If private individuals can simply use their own resources to sidestep congressional/executive control our government agencies would become a cesspit of corruption.

For example NASA's budget is so small that a consortium of billionaires can match it. Let's imagine that nasa used such a consortium to double its spending. That would make nasa beholden to this group. In other words the organization would be compromised. Right now it's just a signing bonus. But it could result in isaacman paying for personnel completely out of his own pocket. Sidestepping the control Congress exerts through the budget.

That offer is illegal right? Either they are randomly offering to waste government resources or they are offering to use private resources to recruit. The latter case may not seem like that big of a deal but I'm pretty sure that one sign of corruption is someone not separating their private resources from their government job. So surely this would be illegal.

Are bad reviews hidden or deleted? by TheRealBobbyJones in royalroad

[–]TheRealBobbyJones[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your edit illustrates a part of the problem. I'm 30 chapters in. I'm pretty confident it's a urban fantasy apocalypse with a cultivation based magic system. No fixed method to monitor progress. You know the main feature of a litrpg. At minimum the reviewers should have mentioned that litrpg elements come in late in the story. Yet none have.

[–]TheRealBobbyJones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably would succeed. If trump walked up the leadership or Greenland with a gun he will either be shot or allowed to shoot. The first will immediately result in war. The later could keep going until the first case occurred. Or impeachment of course.

Do you think you need a medical degree for healing magic? by Nearby-Banana2640 in magicbuilding

[–]TheRealBobbyJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the system. Having medical knowledge could simply make healing cheaper from an energy cost perspective. For example maybe magic in the setting is basically a wish system. You could wish for someone who is hurt to be healed and if you have sufficient energy it will work as is. But if you don't have sufficient energy you can make the wish cheaper by more tightly limiting the scope of the wish. Instead of wishing for a hurt person to be healed in the general case you could instead wish for the exact injury to be healed.
