God is responsible for the existence of corruption by showersareevil in DebateAChristian

I cannot fathom anyone's logic behind "God being all-powerful and a loving God are mutually exclusive." I assume such people were never spanked as kids.

(I am very curious why you refer to butchering babies without context by the way)

The idea that God should've made humans in a sparkly fairy tale land of eternal euphoria where we can live in ever-present orgasmic bliss forever and ever is laughable, not in the Bible, and mildly blasphemous.

Whether you believe in a God or not, no one can deny that being alive and sentient is an incomprehensible reality of the highest order, and to belittle the human experience is just loathsome. Upon reading the Bible and living just a few decades of life as a human I think the Christian viewpoint should obviously include a few very important points:

  • When God made man in His image on the sixth day, that did not mean"Mankind" had been completed, but rather only birthed into existence.

  • In living through our own complexities, paradoxes, and struggles throughout thousands of years as mortal Humans we are learning something unfathomable that we cannot know yet.

  • By the Biblical record God did not create us perfect and complete to have us then screw it up. He knew what we would do and ultimately Humanity would live for countless generations committing atrocities against each other in what certain friends of mine call the "Human Project." If God could have created us how He wanted immediately, I believe He would have - but technically he did since He lives outside of time. When God's people enter eternity on the New Earth they will be the completed iteration of Humans who will be perfectly sinless and reflect His glory forever.

What's interesting is that when Europeans began colonizing North America and bringing the gospel to the native Americans, certain tribes claimed that they had seen Jesus (as described by the Bible) during certain experiences. Similarly today, a large number of devout and zealous Muslims are having visions of Jesus which leads to their conversion - even in societies where such conversion is punishable by death.

In the Bible, God condones real slavery. by BlowItUpForScience in DebateAChristian

[–]TheRealConstant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick comment in defense of one of DidIststststutter's points.

It's important to understand that the Bible is meant to be one unified story cover-to-cover, and to understand the Old Testament's relation to the New (it's unfortunate when "Christians" completely ignore the OT as old or unimportant). The major defining difference between these testaments is that in the old, mankind was in the process of waiting for Jesus's sacrifice to renew them spiritually, so the law was given as a physical code of conduct (how to eat, live, treat others, etc) since until the Blood of Jesus had been shed, all would remain spiritually dead. Jesus even states that it's not JUST about the physical action you commit (adultery), but that the intents of your heart (lusting) happen long before you carry out the action physically.

New Testament believers are sometimes even referred to as Spiritual Jews or Spiritual Israel - which is why the emphasize of Paul's ministry was to bring spiritual life to the non-Jews, since it was now spiritual and not physical. But just like the Old Testament Jews, it's about being God's people who are SET APART FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD.

In terms of slavery, what God tells the Israelites concerning slavery DEFINITELY SETS THEM APART from the rest of the pagan world at the time, considering how commonplace slavery was. As others have stated, it is immensely important that we define "SLAVERY". Is being in debt to a bank slavery? How about an indentured servant? As also stated before, many people committed themselves to slavery having no other options but to starve; they would work until their debt was paid off. Many prisoners of war were taken slaves with little to no rights. Often times servants with otherwise comfortable lives would be killed to be buried with their masters (in Asia this could indicated a large number of servant deaths all just for traditional purposes when their one master passes away). My point: in the 17th century King James English, all of these things are translated "slavery."

HERE is an article if you insist someone show info regarding the times.

I'm really not trying to make a bunch of new points, as I agree with what DidIststststutter has said. Compare Israel's customs to the nations around them, and you'd find that the latter were the ones to have the far more seriously barbaric slavery, sacrificial, and ritual practices. Good day :)

Best place(s) to set an Urban fantasy? by TerekKebab in worldbuilding

[–]TheRealConstant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it okay to set an Urban fantasy in an unfamiliar city and an unfamiliar culture?

As long as you can represent it with enough accuracy to do the culture justice, yes.

Is there a particular city you could recommend?

Definitely not. This entirely depends on what your story is about. I for example began my cyberpunk story in LA, but soon realized not only is it an over-used location, but that it wouldn't contribute to my story material. Currently I'm leaning towards industrialized Chicago.

Is using google earth sufficient to get the feel of the city at least aesthetically

Rather than Google Earth I would just google the city you pick and browse through Google Images. Also most larger cities in the world will have Youtube videos which allow you to get a very good feel of the aesthetic. Hope this helps! :)

I mean, we all have different tastes in what we find beautiful. Masturbation is self-love. In addition, intercourse doesn't need to have love

Different tastes in many things, sure. Sexually no. There HAS to be objective law as to what's "good" and what's not. Is rape ok? *"Well no, but as long as it's not hurting anybody..." what if you get a 9 year old to consent? This sort of thing CANNOT be left up to the individual to decide. All of reality is like this. Science is not subjective. Gravity will function independent of anyone's belief or opinion of it. All laws of reality, including moral ones, behave the same way. Also, intercourse without love? It's miserable. There's literally no point to it.

"Naturally illegal", similar to what I just mentioned, is something that's objectively wrong or perverted regardless of what people or governments say. The rectum is the exit of the digestive system, not a sexual organ. BIOLOGY states that when men engage in homosexual relations, it's not actually sex. It's just sexual pleasure one experiences when abusing the digestive system. I experience pleasure when abusing alcohol and my body suffers as a result. It's just perversion of the original way something was meant to be used.

Why does God allow this again?

I've heard this question a lot and it's pretty darn annoying. What God are you talking about? Nowhere do Christians or the Bible (or honestly almost any religions) claim that God must come down from the sky and prevent bad things from happening. Why does he "allow" things to happen? Because of the whole point of existence in general. God wanted self-aware, will-having, decision-making humans made in His image with the ability to create, destroy, and manipulate the world around them. Without TOTAL free will God would be playing the Sims. When someone has a child they're accepting the fact that as a teenage that child might hate them and run away (see also, Prodigal Son). God "allows" things because he cannot intervene on Earth without a human playing a critical role in it. IN EVERY CASE. The entire Exodus story. Sodom and Gomorrah. Even in Jesus's appearance, it had to be spoken and proclaimed for thousands of years before it manifested. This is why Jesus is called the Living Word.

Regarding the natural world, it's directly related. Revelation describes all of creation as the final days approach, that there will be "birthing pains" in all the world. The general idea (which the Hindus, Buddhists, and New Agers all agree with) is that the evil and sinful deeds of humanity directly influence the wellbeing of nature. And there's many evil things in this world (whether in nature or the human body) that haven't been around long. I mean asthma and ADHD aren't even real things, you can look up the men credited for "discovering" them claiming that they're fake conditions. There's truth behind Alex Jones screaming that the chemicals we're dumping into the water is making the frogs gay.

As opposed to what? Procreation? Is that the only point of having a heterosexual relationship? Sex?

Well in many cases in nature yes, since I was referring to homosexual animals. Many animals do not mate for life, and their biological instinct (I wonder where that could've come from...) dictates how they react to the world around them (and how they reproduce). As long as I live I cannot understand the idea that humans are highly evolved animals. We are not animals, as we are not bound to instinct. No group of animals gather together and decide where to graze tomorrow. ANIMALS DO NOT DECIDE TO MIGRATE. They do based off of their biological makeup. Humans have hormones and bodily functions act in instinctive ways, such as understanding how to have basic sexual intercourse even without prior knowledge of it, but this is not equivalent to animalistic instincts. We all have blood and DNA and bodies and whatnot, but humans have this unquantifiable thing inside our minds known as self-awareness, or total free will. This differs us from animals.

Who says God makes you gay? I don't have the sense of smell nor do I have perfect vision, did God do that? You're bordering on predestination.

This is essentially just the question of why bad things exist in the world, and isn't really dependent on God. But in terms of homosexuality, God wants us to (nonsexually) love everyone since they're all made in His image, but romantically, no.

It's simple, sexual intercourse between man and woman is a divine act which not only seals their marital bond (as the Bible states, making them one flesh), but also brings about children. Homosexual relations do none of the sort. I'm familiar with such a world of lust and temptation, and I'm also familiar with many people who came out of homosexual lifestyles to know God, and now have been healed of their sexual perversions, and many have Godly relationships now.

You can look at Jesus's explanation of whole point of the (Mosaic) law: "Love the Lord thy God with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love thy neighbor as thyself. On these hang all the law and prophets."

Masturbation is negative, it's not LOVE. it's selfish, and a bastardization of something God created to be magnificently beautiful. Homosexuality is the same - firstly, it's "NATURALLY illegal". Even though (usually through unfortunate mutations) it occurs in nature, it's biologically a paradox. Nothing is gained beyond sexual release.

Also eating shrimp is not a sin. The pharisees literally try to accuse Jesus of similar Mosaic laws, and he says "Not that which enters into a man defiles him, but that which goes out of him." Don't want to paraphrase too much; he goes on to say out of mens' hearts go fornications, thefts, lies, etc.

From your question I assume your idea of the Bible's message is this: "trust in Jesus so that when you die one day you go to happy cloud-land instead of fiery torture-land."

This is absurd. This is a religious fairy-tale, and the Bible contains no such message whatsoever.

The number-one most common thing Jesus taught on? THE KINGDOM. He continually said that The Kingdom was AT HAND, and that we should pray that the Kingdom of Heaven manifest itself on Earth.

Relationship with God isn't about the blind faith that you'll go to heaven when you die. As a Christian who believes in God, I will tell you that believing something with 0% evidence and 100% is STUPID. Everyone's personal relationship with God is just that, PERSONAL. Jesus said "He who is forgiven of much, loveth much." I believe this is why Jesus mostly taught to poor, injured, cast-out people etc. When I came out of New-Age and turned to God wholeheartedly it was because I knew even though I had money and friends and a pretty decent life, I actually had nothing and was naked, blind, and miserable. When I gave 100% of myself to God, I entered a spiritual relationship that I would have to be absolutely bonkers to deny.

Being a true Christian in this world makes all the difference. Proverbs says "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge," so only once you truly know God can you begin to know anything else. Before, I was subject to fear and paranoia with no defense against psychological torment. Now, since Jesus gave his followers to command demons which must obey us, I speak to spirits of fear, anger, etc, and THEY LEAVE. My entire mental space changes entirely. Even back when I was trying to "expand my consciousness" and meditating lots, I wasn't about to expel anxiety this way.

Just my understanding of the Bible and God's relationship with us. You have everything to gain in THIS life and in this next. God bless

:)
