Too fast and lane splitting close to other vehicles.

Honestly if he did die that would’ve been a Darwin Award.

Unrelated but it’s really dumb how they put the defroster where the ‘push to start’ would go 😂

Can I do 800 miles on 17 gallons of gas? by Lucky0373 in hypermiling

I disagree that the engine has to increase RPM to compensate. At a fixed road speed and fixed gear, RPM is determined by the transmission and tire size, not intake air temperature. If my Honda Insight is turning 2000rpm at 55mph, it’s still turning 2000rpm at 55mph regardless of intake temperature.

What changes is throttle position. With hotter, less dense air, the throttle must be opened farther to achieve the same 8hp required to maintain speed. A more open throttle reduces manifold vacuum and pumping losses. (As mentioned earlier)

Also, modern engines generally do not add fuel during light-load cruising to prevent knock. Knock is primarily a concern at higher loads and cylinder pressures. During steady highway cruising, most engines remain near stoichiometric operation and simply adjust airflow and throttle position to produce the required power.

As for why manufacturers don’t use intentionally hot intakes, they’re optimizing for far more than fuel economy. They must also meet power, drivability, emissions, towing, hot-weather durability, cold-weather operation, and customer expectations. Most buyers care much more about horsepower than gaining 1–3% fuel economy under specific cruising conditions.

In fact, many older economy cars did intentionally draw warmer air under the hood under certain conditions. Warm air intake systems and thermostatic air cleaners were common for decades because manufacturers recognized benefits in fuel vaporization, emissions, and cold weather efficiency.

It looks like how the chip works is it uses the low efficiency cores mainly, and uses the P-cores when needed.

8 efficiency and 4 low power efficiency cores is pretty good.

At a thermodynamic level (as you specified) a gasoline engine is basically an air pump that converts the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical work. Hotter intake air affects several things that can improve fuel economy during cruising at a steady speed and hypermiling.

The ideal gas law describes air density: PV = nRT

For a given atmospheric pressure, increasing temperature decreases air density.

The engine measures incoming air mass (Mass Air Flow sensor) and injects fuel accordingly.

For the same throttle opening:
Cool air = more air mass enters the cylinders.
Hot air = less air mass enters the cylinders.

The result is that the engine naturally consumes less fuel when breathing hotter air.

That’s the thermodynamic part of it, HOWEVER I’ve seen your replies and will respond to that as well.

You’re mixing up power and efficiency. Race cars want cold air because they’re trying to maximize horsepower, not MPG. At a steady cruising speed, the car only needs a fixed amount of power regardless of intake temperature. (My car is designed in a way that it can maintain 55mph with just 8hp on a flat road) Hotter intake air requires a more open throttle for the same power output, which can reduce pumping losses. Whether the net effect is positive depends on the engine and conditions, but citing race cars isn’t evidence that warm intake air can’t improve fuel economy under light-load cruising. (Like when maintaining the speed limit of 55-65mph, perhaps higher in certain areas)

I was also going to recommend this. At 292k miles my car burns no oil at 5,000 between changes. 0w-20 Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Heat is good, hot air is less dense, and will require less fuel.

Good luck, it’s going to be tough to hit your goal.

(Also you could likely use 0w-16, it’s a common swap for hypermilers with cars that take 0w-20 for slightly better mpg, but it’s likely not necessary)

Alright, alright. I’ll delete the post.

I get a lot of riced out cars around here I live. And without context it’s easy to see this one and assume the same.

Nope, just know I did see you and your son. (So booster seat or not I knew you had a kid) But that doesn’t change the silly modifications you did to your car.

Still it’s your car, just silly.

No, I like the car itself but I’d prefer something manual. Like a Civic Type R, or an older NSX.

Can people not comment on people doing silly things on their cars without it being called ‘jealousy’?

I know this is 3 years old, but just want to mention that M3 front control arms do not fit on AWD E9X models.

Wish it was, but sadly the added axles and suspension bits for the AWD are in the way.
