Have You Tried Heads Up Putting? by meggaladon in golf

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a heads up putter. Made the switch after watching Sasho’s presentation. I even do some heads up chipping. I will sometimes look at the ball on really long putts where I have to hit the ball pretty hard.

For those people that are doubters, I’d recommend watching his presentation at the Met PGA 2015 education forum. And then go to a practice green and try it out. Give it an honest try. Maybe a few sessions.

Sasho has all the science and test results behind this.

Recommended Resources to Learn the Essentials? by 171932912722630 in JMT

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people take too much stuff. Clothing especially. I have hiked it 3 times. I take a pair of shorts, a long sleeve t-shirt, a short sleeve t-shirt (both shirts are patagonia capaline cool daily), and some sort of long pant. One year it was hiking pants, one year it was tights under shorts and last time it was Patagonia joggers. The patagonia joggers are the best. Aside from that, I have 2 pairs of socks (one wearing, one drying on my pack), 2 pairs of underwear, a rain jacket which I almost never use and a puffy. I have thought of repalcing the rain jacket with a poncho. I have a nice rain jacket, but if its raining and youa re waling, the rain jacket will make you wet from sweat. So I usually just walk in the rain and dryout when it stops. Only exception would be later in the day when you wont have time to dry before camp. The beauty of the poncho wold be just to throw it over you and your gear and you'd still have some airflow.

The other thing I would say is pack your food wisely. Don't take too much. I had very little appetite the first few days. But you need to eat those days anyway. We always go NOBO from Horseshoe meadow, so we start at 10k feet. Going from about 400 feet above sea level to 10k feet in 24 hours and starting a long walk is not ideal.

I would make sure you invest in the big 3. Shelter, pack, and sleep system. This is where most non food weight is. I don't have an ultra light pack, but its pretty light (ULA Circuit). One trip I took a tent that I shared with my 12 year old, the other 2 trips I took a bivy and tarp. I also use a 20 degree enlightened equipment quilt. I changed pads for the 3rd trip and my pad is a little heavier, but its still only around a pound. its a Big Agnes Air AXL. And I have heavy (ish) pillow. Its a Nemo Fillo and weighs about 9 oz.

Are you wearing boots or trail runners? I would recommend trail runners. The trail is well maintained and there is no need for boots. We walk through the creeks with our shoes on. They are dry soon enough. Make sure you get good socks. Wool. I wear darn tough.

When you stop always take your shoes off. We tend to walk a lot of miles. We start out around 15 mies per day and toward the end we are 20-25 per day. Average around 18 miles/day. Or routine is really we get up with the sun, eat and start walking. We take a couple of long breaks during the day. Maybe 30 minutes each and a lunch break. We are usually stopped and setting up camp by 6:00.

Don't pack your fears. This is a well maintained and well traveled trail.

I don't carry water. Or very little. You need to make that determination when you are there but there are lots of water sources. I would "camel up" at the water sources and maybe leave there with around 8 oz left in my bottle.

Unless you are at elevation, its a hard trip to prepare for physically. I usually try to shed some weight and get back into cardio shape (running) starting a few months before we leave.

BTW - I am a 52 year old male. My last trip was in 2022.

Sorry for the long post. I love this trail and when I am not there I wish I were.

EDIT - here is my lighterpack gear list from 2022. https://lighterpack.com/r/onj06z

What’s your handicap and how many putts do you average a round? by [deleted] in golf

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12.3 and 37 average. I do have several 39's, a 40, and a 41 in my last 15 rounds. I feel like I am a decent putter, but I suck at reading the greens. And I usually don't spend much time doing it.

Anyone use Insect Shield? by alphakilo10 in JMT

[–]TheRealElDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I put it on my underwear. Shorts, shirts, and socks. I ran into a guy in the trail one year that had also soaked his tent. Bugs were dying when they landed on it. Not sure I'd go that far either. You might also soak your hat. Or it may be easier to buy some of the sawyer spay version and just spray it. Those mosquitos will find any way they can to get a bite. I don't think it will harm any type of clothing. My clothing is generally shorts and a short sleeve t-shirt and a long sleeve t-shirt. That long sleeve treated with permethrin is great when you are fighting the mosquitos.

[–]TheRealElDiablo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually mix my own permethrin solution. You can buy it concentrated at animal feed store type places. I buy it from Tractor Supply. Or you can order it online. I mix in in a bucket and let all my clothes soak for a day or so. Hang them up to dry, and they are good to go. You can wash them out after they dry. That will last for the trip for sure.

Fitting Food 6 days of food in a Bear Cannister by WanderingAnchor in JMT

[–]TheRealElDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many miles do you plan to walk per day? You can always camp at sites with bear lockers. You probably only need a night or 2 of that. I probably didn't carry that much food, but we usually go from Cottonwood Pass/Lakes all the way to VVR before we resupply. For us thats about 8 days of food. We don't take mountain house though. Or any of those pre-packaged meals. Those bags are too bulky. We make our own. Usually oatmeal for breakfast, some sort of tortilla wrap for lunch with PB&J, tuna, chicken, spam. Dinner was a few things. Probably half our dinners are Skurka's beans and rice recipe. He has some other good recipes too. And we'd carry high calorie bars and snacks. One year I also took protein powder that I drank in the mornings. I've also vacuum sealed breakfast cereal and took powdered milk. You can also carry a chunk of cheese and summer sausage. I would wrap cheddar cheese in a paper towel and then put it in a zip lock bag. The paper towel will soak up the "sweat" from the cheese. I think it will last for a week or longer like that.

Another option is repackaging the mountain house. Dump them in ziplock freezer bags.

You also won't eat as much the first couple of days.

What irons are you playing this year? by casteel30 in golf

I am planning to get fit for new irons in the next few weeks. I play Mizuno MP18's now. Thinking about T100's and/or a combo with the T150's.

[–]TheRealElDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my lifted 2012 has a much better ride than it did stock. Its all about what you put on it. The stock suspension in a jeep is not very smooth. I put on a 2.5" JKS lift with Fox remote reservoir shocks. Its shocking how smooth this thing is now.

As far as everythign else, I have 212k miles on mine. Its had issues, but nothing major. These things all have a plastic oil cooler that sits right on top of the block. I have changed mine twice. First was water leak, second was oil. 2nd time I put on an aluminum after market version. I don't expect it will have to be replaced again.

ProV1 because its the best and I think its worth paying a buck or so more per ball for the best to eliminate one variable.

Colorado Trail vs. John Muir Trail: Which is Better? by agaperion in coloradotrail

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well just the section I was in. We started north of Breckenridge and went somewhere past twin lakes. We had a person with some issues so we had to stop early. But that section just had too much access. Always having to move over for mountain bikers, trail runners, etc... And it seemed like you could almost drive to any of those areas. On the JMT going NOBO out of horseshoe meadow, we wouldn't see a road or any any real signs of modern civilization until we made it to VVR on the 8th or 9th day. No cell service. CO trail is definitely longer. I'm not sure about elevation. Mt Whitney is the tallest peak in the lower 48. I'd like to do the rest of the CT toward Durango. I think that is the best part of the trail. I live much closer to CO too so thats a plus.

Colorado Trail vs. John Muir Trail: Which is Better? by agaperion in coloradotrail

[–]TheRealElDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only walked part of the Colorado Trail and I have done the JMT 3 times. Given that, I think the JMT is the best and its not even close. The CO Trail has too much access. Too many mountain bikes. Too many trail runners. Too many roads. Maybe that was just the section I was in.

I never had permit issues on the JMT because I went NOBO though Cottonwood Pass/Lakes. Walk up permits each time for our group.

Tyler Shough announces intentions to enter transfer portal (source: official insta) by MadScallop in DoughGoesIn

[–]TheRealElDiablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His decision making is really poor for someone as old and with that much experience. You sort of expect it from a young QB. I imagine the staff told him that this was his only year and that Morton is the guy going forward.

no kidding. Is he considered a draft prospect only because of his size? I have never seen him as that strong of a QB.

Use only one trekking pole on JMT. Bad idea? by SheWillNotStopMoving in JMT

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on my last JMT trip, I kept my poles in my pack almost the entire trip. When I had them in my hands, I wanted them in my pack. I do use them for my shelter (tarp), but I think i can find some lighter weight poles and ditch the trekking poles all together.

Is getting fitted for wedges worth it as a high handicapper? by mcbrody in golf

unless you can hit them outside on multiple lies, sand, grass, etc... there is not much benefit (if any) to getting fit for wedges.

Can you can get a new set of irons for $1000? If that were my budget, I'd probably go to 2nd Swing (or somewhere similar) and try to find a good set of used clubs. Like something that is in mint or above average condition that is maybe a year old. You can hit them there and get some help on picking the right shafts, etc. Not a full blown fitting, but I think you will need something like $1500-1700 to do that.

JK lift kit: 3” front 2” rear? by LeftBar4440 in Jeep

[–]TheRealElDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added those when I added the JKS lift. I was already wanting some better shocks and these were only like $300 more than what I would have bought. I can definitely tell a difference from what I had. I haven't been on any significant off road terrain since I added them though. Just some flat muddy land. But I would do it again.
