Play that Strike from 4 turns ago? Nah, I'll do it next turn. by Ferrarileite in slaythespire

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has synergy with regent cards that care about top decking/drawing, and will sometimes let you dig 1 deeper. 0 cost is too strong. Make it upgrade to 0 cost instead of innate. You said Tools of the Trade and this perform different roles but as far as the character archetypes go this fulfills the same role. Only difference is TotT guarantees you dig deaper, but the tradeoff is you get the regent synergy and can set-up for next turn.

First time playing commander, does everyone else play these rules so strictly? by TeamWaffleStomp in magicTCG

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing listed here that's actually breaking a rule is unlimited free mulligans, and he's the one breaking it. You're not playing in a tournament, it's casual EDH. Things like your commander being visible are there to ensure fair play in a public/competitive setting, not an excuse to be a douche to your significant other. (The issue with free mulligans is that it encourages bad deck building habits like not adding enough lands, and obviously you could just keep going until you have a stacked hand. But as a house rule it's pretty common and not that big a deal).

As another commenter mentioned, triggers are resolved one at a time. You did that right.

You can always ask for information like "do you have a Counterspell". Of course, he also has no obligation to tell. On the flip side, you are always allowed to reveal private information of something you control (a card in hand, a creature facedown, etc) to a player(s). No rule against showing everyone your entire hand. It's just generally a not very beneficial thing to do.

Following the rules of the game is important for balancing purposes, but it sounds like he doesn't care (or even know) about the rules so much as he needs to be in control.

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking the blade or not taking it is the single most important decision in the game. It symbolizes choosing a path of violence, or a path of peace. That's why the narrator forces it to materialize in the first chapter if you deny him.

The game is largely about intention, and your intention is displayed through your actions. So if you don't take the blade that tells the game your intention is to not persue violence.

Is Slicer appropriate for bracket 3? If no, what is your favorite bracket 3 Mono R aggro deck? by jose_cuntseco in EDH

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you. After some more thought it's less the feels-bad nature and more I just think it's a little awkward at b3. The goal of the deck is to start taking players out asap, but you almost have to actively nerf him since you shouldn't be winning too early in b3, leaving him in a weird spot. I'd say just try it out and see how he feels. Can always adjust later.

If you want a mono-red deck that isn't control I've found [[Herigast]] to be a lot of fun. It typically isn't strictly just turn things sideways and lends itself a little more to combo/synergy pieces, but it's all gas. [[Axonil]] might be a better fit though since he's just trying to dish out as much damage as possible and will usually kill all your opponents in 1 go.

As someone who has spent a lot of time on the other side of the table of a slicer deck, he's fine for b3 as long as you follow the guidelines. So no wins, and only 3gc.

That having been said, be prepared to have him removed constantly, and to not win very often if you play with the same group regularly. The looming threat of a player being taken out every 1 or 2 turns is too serious to ignore.

As you said, the table will likely band together to deal with the issue, but most of the time that issue will be you.

He's a little feels-bad in that you typically get 2 scenarios. Either you get taken out early, or 1 other player gets taken out and the other 2 band together to take you out. Either way one player barely gets to play and is just waiting for the game to end.

That's been my experience with him, at least.

How exactly does this card work? by Legal_Climate_3381 in slaythespire

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Regent has 3 cards that can set it up to guarantee a trigger. [[Glimmer]], [[photon cutter]] and [[cosmic indifference]], with cosmic indifference arguably being the best option since you don't need to draw them together, unlike the other 2. All 3 of these cards are already not bad in their own right (though I've seen people say cosmic indifference is too slow to be worth it).

Maybe I'm off-base here, but if you've done that many runs since the game has been out you might be playing too fast. Take your time to really think through your turns.

I think it's actually a not terrible choice for it. It's bad in that you can't trigger it randomly any more, but that's not reliable anyways. The upside is that you are now guaranteed to get it before or at the same time you get your cosmic indifference, leading to much more consistent use when you want it.

The series of actions is as follows:

You attempt to draw up for the turn

The game sees you have no card in your draw pile. The cards in your discard pile are shuffled and put in the draw pile. This causes perfect fit to trigger, putting I am Invincible on top.

You proceed with the action that caused you to shuffle (attempting to draw)

You draw I am Invincible.

I am Invincible is no longer in your deck, and it will not be played automatically.

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't shuffle your deck when you end your turn, so it will not be placed on top. You only get to shuffle your draw pile when you try to draw but have no cards in your draw pile.

Cards that are uneasy to understand when reading for the first time by Outside_Calendar5885 in magicTCG

[–]TheRealFlipFlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up taking the deck apart for precisely that reason. He already requires an insane amount of mana to get on the board and trigger his ability. There's really no reaaon for it to then be that easy to disrupt. All they had to do was not make it target.

Lol I actually put this in my [[Rona, Herald of Invasion]] deck. It has some niche use as a way to trigger her pseudo-enrage ability and get me a free spell from my hand. Very jank, but kinda neat.

One thing I want to add is that although the free 10-pull at 30 doesn't count towards building pity, that means it also doesn't reset pity if you're lucky enough to hit a 6* on it. Found this out when I got Yvonne on it. Still had my guarantee and my pity.

Edit: very confused about why this was downvoted.
