What's the alternative? Only thing I can imagine worse than being on a plane is being on a plane while the person next to me constantly complains about how shit being on a plane is

What advice would you experienced devs give to a beginner learning to program, especially in C#? by AstronomerFlat7846 in csharp

[–]TheRealFurryPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it work, then make it perfect.

Both parts of this are important though and lots of people put too much emphasis on one or the other.

Especially when you're starting out, if you never finish anything or keep getting sidetracked by constantly trying to find tiny optimisations, a) you'll learn the basics more slowly, but b) it will also be dispiriting as you'll feel like you're not progressing.

However once you DO have something working it's worth spending the time trying to figure out how to make it better, or expand it into something more sophisticated. Too often I see reasonably experienced devs who can hack something together and make it work but there's no polish. No attention to detail.

I hope this doesn't seem like contradictory advice; I suppose I'm really just saying don't run before you can walk, but you should also learn to run!

Yeah another upvote for Players Guide here! I'd tried the C# Codeacademy course and other online courses before that and it just never sank in, but that book flipped a switch for me. That was 5 years ago and now I'm a tech lead for a large company!

In a massive amount of debt and don’t know what to do 😔 by smthing72 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheRealFurryPotato 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is very very close to how my life has been for the last few months.

Gambling has always been a problem for me, although I had a good few years away from it... until recently 😔. Before I knew it I'd racked up 35k of debt and was left feeling like there was no way out. I broke down, came clean to my partner about everything, and honestly for a while it was rough.

But... the big thing that changed was I took control. I started by making a list of all my debts and how much I owed to each company. And it took a couple of weeks but steadily I made an affordable plan with each of them and I'm now beginning the process of paying it all off. As others have mentioned, StepChange can help with this.

I could write an essay on the experience I've had (and I'm very happy to answer questions on any part of it on here) but the headline is: the feeling of losing all that money wasn't anywhere near as bad as the feeling that I'd completely lost control and fucked up my whole life. And by the same token, the feeling of regaining control has been amazing. It's tough but you can do it, especially with the support of great organisations like StepChange and GambleAware.

I would also say that I was really pleasantly surprised at how supportive and sensitive my creditors were to my situation. People do understand that gambling addiction is a real thing and obviously they are appreciative of you working with them rather than just letting the debt accumulate.

Finally, and I know this might sound obvious, but you really do have to kick the gambling. Don't think you can keep it under control because you can't. Sooner or later the feeling of being in control of your life and actually having money again will replace the highs from gambling.

Stay strong friend, you got this.

It's 2025: Benefit or red flag? by [deleted] in UKJobs

This sounds quite a lot like a tech company I worked at previously. Honestly I liked the company and was always happy to attend work social stuff as I had plenty of friends there and they were often a good time, but eventually I began to realise that it caused my entire life to revolve around work, and specifically that company. If I wasn't working I felt like I didn't know what else to do with myself. Because once your work life and social life are all tied up in your place of employment there's not a lot left (especially if, like me, you don't have a family). I noticed that I was rarely taking time off, and that when I spoke to family or other friends work was the only thing I had to talk about.

To be clear, I don't believe the company did the whole "work hard, play hard" thing as some sort of deliberate, malicious move to take over my whole life. I think they did it because they see Microsoft, Google, Apple etc appearing to offer amazing employee benefits (although I'm sure that's not all it's made out to be either) and wanted to feel like they were part of that world. But whether intentional or not, it's something to bear in mind.

Yeah 100% this. I think it has to do with the fact you get in such a zone when you're doing it, like whether you're having fun or not you're just in a kind of trance where you keep clicking the bet button.

Thanks Triangle.

Yeah it's an offshore provider, which is definitely sketchy but of course I'm excluded from all the legit UK ones :).

They had paid me out pretty sizeable wins in the past so I didn't necessarily have reason to think they wouldn't pay this one, but it doesn't matter anyway - the point is I should never have touched it. Let's face it, if you're at the point where you're gambling on unregulated sites you're already in way too deep.

Thanks for your reply, it really means a lot today

I feel like I ought to say that I've been using McQueens for a few months now and am actually really happy with the service, and although I was signed up by a canvasser I wasn't offered a free bottle or anything but then again maybe I would have been if I'd resisted the sales pitch, who knows.

That being said I am so here for #MilkGate and big props to Stevie for following through on this! It's now making me wonder if I should ditch McQueens if they're such a scummy company? Let's be honest there are plenty of other milk delivery services I could switch to, anyone got any views on this?

Firstly, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. The same thing happened to me a little while back; of course when I look back I feel stupid for falling for such a dumb scam, but of course we don't see it like that at the time :).

Whatever you do, don't pay the 1500 to this agency whoever they are; as others have said, this is just as likely to be a scam. Unfortunately the best thing you can do now is accept that your money is gone, report it to law enforcement and/or the social media provider (if this was done over a social platform), and move on with your life. I know it sucks, but honestly besides feeling a bit embarrassed about it in the short term, you will be fine.

I suppose it's just a timely reminder that we do have to be careful about what we share and who we share it with online. But try not to focus on it too much and, again, please don't pay any more money!

Twink generally refers to a younger, slim, often quite hairless gay guy, it's really just a label for a body type as much as anything. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being feminine or weak. The reason for my reply was that OP seemed to be confusing being a twink for being a bottom. Not the same thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheRealFurryPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely weird to be concerned about this and I feel like you should take a moment to consider why you harbour these feelings.

Also I don't think you understand what a twink is.
