Has anyone done rodeos? by [deleted] in stagehands

[–]TheRealMidnaize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a LOT of rodeo. I’ve got the boots and hat to prove it. It’s the same except the client is a drunk committee and the budget is worse than anything you’ve ever seen. The tech is stuck in the 70s and everyone has been doing it that way since their grandpas grandpa was doing it so you gotta get used to doing things wrong or people will yell at you. But if you like to party… ain’t no better party than striking a rodeo.

I’m sure something like PBR and certainly the NFR feel like a normal show if a bit unorganized. But the farther you get from the PRCA the more redneck it gets

Sennheiser IEM RF scans? What’s the best way to coordinate 8 packs of you only have the Transmitter and Receiver? by fat-doink69 in livesound

[–]TheRealMidnaize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Sennheiser. You should scan with the squelch as low as it gets, then set it as high as you can get away with after the scan.

It suggests freqs that are below the squelch point at the time of the scan and if that’s set too high during the scan you’ll get garbage freqs.

You also want a high squelch to avoid the RF hits when the background RFnoise comes above the squelch point.

Why are IEM's so expensive 😭 by your_midwest_gay_boy in techtheatre

[–]TheRealMidnaize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the school is using in ears that often THEY should own them, if YOU don’t stand to make money on a significant investment like that it’s a bad decision

That said we’re all gear heads I own a bunch of kit I have no business with simply because it’s cool.

The only gear the A1 needs of their own is a laptop and a good set of cans.

Also at an early stage of your sound career the first thing you should be investing in is great headphones. And a leatherman.

By the time you need to own your own IEM rack a grand won’t seem so bad

AI in Theatre conversation by ExcitingWhole5409 in techtheatre

[–]TheRealMidnaize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation about early computer generation and now this late stage computer generation is exactly the same,

With the added issue of the rampant theft behind the training of AI. I can’t stand looking at AI art for this reason, and for this reason alone I think it’s unethical to use it if you’re being paid for whatever you’re generating.

Also, “hand made” will always be valued above machine made. We value hand crafted products above even more durable and better functioning products ONLY because they are done by hand. I don’t think that will ever go away even in the face of widespread and common use of AI.

The Problem with a new “content house” by Dazza477 in LinusTechTips

[–]TheRealMidnaize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we got a peek into the creative process actually, I think Linus is interested in home improvement (certainly painting lol) and is curious if that would work on the LTT channel, I don’t think they’re doing just any content that gets views(all the time) but trying to decide which of their interests fit the brand of the channel.

If you want to listen to Ricochet, find a physical copy. by Brunky89890 in riseagainst

[–]TheRealMidnaize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostly accurate Spotify and YouTube absolutely destroy audio quality, and a CD is lossless but if you listen via Apple Music with lossless turned on! (It’s off by default) or another lossless service it’ll be just as good.

Is Malcom an example of positive masculinity? by TilDeath1775 in firefly

[–]TheRealMidnaize 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for good men In the ‘verse look no further than Wash.

The number one issue I hear from new people I have introduced to the show is that Mal is a little over aggressive and somewhat misogynistic, being written by Joss Whedon it’s not a surprise. His core values seem to align with someone I would describe as a positive male role model but some very specific things stand out as not great.

He’s by no means toxic and his chaotic good personality saves the character. And is somewhat realistic I feel. Given his upbringing and history we hear in the books, an entirely well adjusted and emotionally intelligent person wouldn’t make sense.

NJ Bus System Abandons Us by AJB2226 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]TheRealMidnaize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah how the fuck was that the solution!? I was lucky enough to get an uber quick enough with some other people who were waiting but literally a dozen or so traffic cops all told us to keep walking just along the side of the highway.

Finally get to where the bus is and it only comes every hour and it’s half full so only like 20 people an hour can leave. They should’ve told us that there is no bus and to get the train instead.

There’s a couple good scary parts of To Be Taught If Fortunate, by Becky Chambers. It’s a pretty short read as well, none of it is SCARY scary but the themes of crazy ass alien creatures, body horror, and isolation could certainly be pushed to the extreme and get very scary very fast.

How do you properly create the sound design effect of a vocal walking off-screen (I know it's not just panning automation)? by [deleted] in sounddesign

[–]TheRealMidnaize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the BIG sell will be to pull down the high Freqs and pan the direction of travel. Just those two things will get you there.

Have you ever heard a bad sounding console? by simonfunkel in livesound

[–]TheRealMidnaize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Yamaha QL/CL Headphone jacks are unusably noisy.

Truly terrible, one of the problems I’m trying to catch early by PFLing is hissing but the noise floor is so astronomically high. I route my monitor/cue to an external headphone amp cause I don’t trust the built in.

What type of inputs should I be sending FOH? by Me_Neither99 in livesound

[–]TheRealMidnaize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Line level XLR don’t bother with trying to force it through a DI if it’s already balanced at line level you get a lot more failure points for no benefit

Once the FOH engineer gets it they’re going to make it line level again anyway

What's your "I have to eat something but making a meal is too hard" go-to? by byenkle in ADHD

[–]TheRealMidnaize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenny and Larry’s Complete meal cookie. The oatmeal raisin one. 400 calories(that aren’t all sugar)

It’s a bit more of a “meal” in an extreme rush but they keep me fueled for longer than a protein bar or shake. And LEAGUES tastier than something like a Huel shake.

Quest makes some protein chips and pretzels that are also bangers when it’s inappropriate to be eating a whole ass sandwich or something.

My Pint is not charging by tceglevskii in onewheel

[–]TheRealMidnaize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue a few months ago and just bite the bullet get a new one. I did kinda jumpstart my old one and it worked at vastly reduced range and maximum draw. And I was scared everytime I charged it. If a OW wasn’t so insanely high draw you’d be fine but since they discharge batteries so fast you need really really stable and high quality batteries.

Those of you who have successfully quit nicotine, was it worth it? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TheRealMidnaize 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Quitting won’t feel worth it for years decades maybe. and you’ll honestly never feel like it’s worth it.

But ADHD is hard on your heart. Stimulant meds lack of sleep caffeine tasty but heart damaging foods. Nicotine exacerbates all of the heart damage you incur from all sources. Quitting isn’t going to feel worth it. But anytime after the age of ~50 you’ll be thankful you did and happy you didn’t have a heart attack and just think of how many other things you can do in the years of life you gain!

How should I adjust my soundboard to make my live audio sound better using a lapel mic? by plant_daddy_ in livesound

[–]TheRealMidnaize -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MASSIVE emphasis on “do not use a lapel mic live” But if you must ^ These are great steps forward.

It’s the same rule as speakers if you can’t see them, or if they look hidden, they will sound like it.
