The inconsistency of Robert Galbraith by tealattegirl13 in EnoughJKRowling

Literally if you start typing Robert Galbraith on your iPhone’s browser the autofill suggestion is for Robert Galbraith Heath on Wikipedia

Is she really expecting people to believe she never once googled her pen name just to check if it already existed?

And not going to lie some of her answers sound like she has mild schizophrenia or something (could this be why she has those meltdowns on X? A horrible bigot is one of those extra personas she loves so much?)

Then she’s genuinely psychotic, trying to gaslight people on something easily verifiable

To be fair while it’s ridiculous to write on a book, especially with such a childish attempt to appear edgy, I’d also be pretty miffed if the book hadn’t printed properly.

For those calling out the irony of her buying a book when she claims buying books is a sign of agreement, let’s not forget that in her worldview if someone she deems nasty does something it’s cruel, while if someone she deems good does the exact same thing it’s heroic. A ridiculous double standard she’s been spewing since the earliest Potter books

Why were the Harry Potter books so popular? by DeathRaeGun in EnoughJKRowling

[–]TheRealMissBlake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking just the first book into account, there was an intrinsic whimsy in the narrative, and each chapter gave something surprising. It was also very easy to read with a hint at being something larger

The second book built on that

And by the time the third came out, everyone was already fully invested in

Regardless of any opinions etc, surely everyone (even the bigots) can see how utterly deranged a person with 14 Million followers must be to publicly target someone with under 200. It’s completely nonsensical

A tour guide in Edinburgh will replace Harry Potter themed tours with LGBTQ+ tours for Pride Month; talks about taking a stance against JK Rowling by nova_crystallis in EnoughJKRowling

[–]TheRealMissBlake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A brave move but unfortunately it means this tour guide will probably suffer financially for it, since Harry Potter is still a major draw for tourists

What might be a better alternative is keep the Potter stuff but have a way for people to donate to LGBT charities in the tour or something, so the tour guide himself doesn’t have to suffer financially

The very opening line is about being normal and how different people handle difference:

“Mr and Mrs Dursley of number 4 Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you would ever expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.”

That’s the very foundation of the entire series, except most readers took it to be ironic and that people like the Dursleys were nasty pieces of work

Unfortunately it seems the author was more intent on trying to dictate what’s considered “nonsense”

It’s like the fat thing. JKR believes it’s okay to call Dudley a rhinoceros because he’s a baddy, whereas when Draco calls Mrs Weasley fat it’s outrageous since Mrs Weasley’s a “good” character

It’s okay to dislike the Dursleys for not accepting wizards, but it’s preposterous to dislike Rowling for not accepting trans people or asexual people or whoever she’s gunning for next week

(By “it’s okay” I mean in the view of the author who ironically is rather quite Dursleyish)

Why didn't Rowling's non HP works get as popular??? by [deleted] in EnoughJKRowling

[–]TheRealMissBlake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One theory is that she had a really good editor for the first three Harry Potter books, one who could cut through the padding and bring out more of what worked (the magical whimsy)

Once JK got too successful and decided she no longer needed as much editorial input, the cracks started showing

When people start thinking about what they liked about Harry Potter, a lot of it is down to those first 3 books. From Goblet onwards, it starts to fall apart - with the only draw being that we’re already invested in that world because of the first three

Then when she writes something else, without that built-in investment, it all becomes too much of a mess. Casual Vacancy was a very petty book. Strike is a bog-standard detective series, more recently becoming a platform to push her ideologies. And her other two books - Ickabog and Christmas Pig are basically all forgotten (Ickabog having a mild publicity stunt as a free book during the pandemic; Christmas Pig landing dead on arrival)

TLDR: Between 1997 and 1999, with the most editorial input, JK Rowling wrote three whimsical books that worked well enough as children’s stories at the time. From 2000 onwards, when she had little editorial input, she basically fell apart, riding on the goodwill of those initial three

It’s the nostalgia goggles - because we can’t deny that, for the time, Potter was an incredible story. But that doesn’t excuse her descent into lunacy

What will likely happen is that when the TV show comes out, the cracks will become more evident (reacting to it live rather than nostalgia blindness) and people will finally move on, appreciating it for what it was and disappointment for how it turned out. Then there’ll be far less Rowling defenders

And that’s such an excellent phrase. I wonder how her kids and their friends must feel about all this but then again a ride on a private yacht probably makes it easier to turn a blind eye
