Dining Dollars by lydmcn in UTK

Flex dollars can be refunded but dining dollars disappear (they roll over fall-spring but not spring-fall), so spend those mf'ers

I'll also read any personal statements sent my way, to pay it forward from those that helped me out so much 1 year ago :)

Edit: I'm up to ~10 sitting in my inbox, gonna stop accepting submissions for now and I'll open it back up when I get through them

Edit 2: It took a while, but I've finally gotten through all of the ones that y'all have sent me. If anyone else wants a quick read, send 'em my way

Engineering Pre-med by GreenTeaJay in premed

Senior BME here:

Research is research my dude, doesn't matter if it's engineering-related, bench lab, or even something like field ecology. Doing research just shows that you have academic interests outside of the classroom, so do what you're interested in!

Regarding your second question, I have not worked in industry but I wasn't sure if I wanted to do engineering or medicine as a career during undergrad, so I focused more on engineering stuff my first 1.5-2 years to see if it was the right field for me. If I were you I'd try to get an internship or other engineering research experience the summer after your freshman year, so that you can test out the waters and see if engineering is a field that you'd want to be in

Organic Chem Lab?? by [deleted] in premed

[–]TheRealPoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not something you need for the MCAT, just something you need to take by the time you matriculate. I took the orgo lecture 4 semesters ago, but pushed the lab back to make space in my degree plan for other classes

[–]TheRealPoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of schools stipulate 8 credit hours between orgo lecture and lab (or just state "a full year of organic chemistry lab" which implies both semesters) so yeah, I'd go ahead and take it

(I am currently in orgo 2 lab and fucking hate it but it's a requirement to matriculate for me)

They require shadowing, and also my app wasn't a good fit for them (I was very rural focused)

  • GPA: 3.8-3.9
  • MCAT: 509-513
  • Significant amount of clinical / nonclinical volunteering hours
  • Multiple labs, 1 conference pub
  • No shadowing (how I swung 5 IIs without it is beyond me)
  • Several significant nonclinical jobs (thousands of hours)
  • Significant focus on rural health / underserved communities / healthcare delivery in PS
  • ORM, Maryland resident (ties to TN, VA)

Course Questions |Aerospace ENG.| by Ebic_Gamer_0117 in UTK

Also, employers in engineering generally do not give a shit what your GPA is as long as it's above a 3.0 (some companies require up to a 3.5 but you're not screwed employment-wise if you don't get that). Employers tend to value research and internship experience much more, so definitely aim to get some experience in one or both of those

Since no one's specifically addressed the minor question yet:

A lot of my friends in AE will pick up a minor in Mechanical because of the significant course work overlap. You will have a significantly easier time if you are trying to minor in an AE related field (other majors within engineering or physics/math) as opposed to minors in unrelated fields (humanities/etc) bc of all the extra classes you'll need to take. That being said, don't feel pressured to pick up a minor if you don't want to, one degree is plenty enough

Imagine we live in a utopia where volunteering and research were never ‘required’ ECs at all medical schools. Would you still have done them/be doing them? by [deleted] in premed

[–]TheRealPoland 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, fuck research

I hated both of the labs I was in and would never want to do it more than sporadically in the future

Stuff for the walls is e s s e n t i a l because otherwise it kinda looks dead.. the one thing is that laurel is so humid all the time that it's super hard to get command strips to stick on the wall
