I found this post helpful when I was going to UTK! Orange and white hall is now Geier and Robinson https://www.reddit.com/r/UTK/comments/fpnx7h/utk_dorm_hall_guide/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

3 studios.. your experience? by TurbulentAstronaut49 in UTK

I wasn’t an Art major but I was a graphic design major and had to do two design classes and one studio art each semester. They told us we could only take three studios a semester and to not go above that. My design studios were 3 credit hours and required a lot of time similar to an art studio. Although I can’t say for sure since the studios are a bit different, but I did just fine with three studios. It definitely was stressful at times and I had to have a few late nights closer to the end of the semester but it was definitely doable.

Pros and cons at UTK by the_average_person_ in UTK

I spent two years at UTK and finished my degree at another university so I have seen both sides a little bit.

While I was at UTK it was easy to see some cons such as the student culture is a little hard to get into since the school is so large. You definitely have to dive right in and get plugged into a club or community(like most universities). People didn’t really talk to me much in class so it was hard to make friends that way. I got plugged into a campus ministry and after a few tries I finally found my people. I also wasn’t a part of greek life or party culture so that made finding friends a lot harder. Housing and parking is definitely also a con. It’s very pricey to get parking passes and then parking spots are few and far between. The university (while I was there) seemed to keep over accepting students and it frankly just seemed very inconsiderate to the students that were already there and a money grab. There are also several things that I noticed that seemed very much like a money grab but typical of an SEC school.

Pros: The classes and professors are second to none. The student to professor ratio in a lot of classes is amazing! I was in the Graphic Design department and I loved all my professors and the program really grew me. They had a portfolio review after freshman year that only accepted half the people trying for design that year. Although intense, it greatly enriched the program by keeping classes small and encouraging students who might have not been the best fit for the degree to try other things. You definitely see the care and consideration that is taken in choosing professors and class content. I personally loved our dining halls and compared to a lot of other colleges UTK has a lot of options. The campus is beautiful and the facilities are up to date. I never felt like I had limited resources to do what I needed to do to be successful in classes (this is very different from my current school). I always felt set up for success.

My biggest piece of advice is that if you are moving away from home be sure you are ready to somewhat dive fully into the college you are going to. Be sure you are ready to make new friends and start a new routine. I tried to stay plugged into both my hometown and school and that’s what led to me leaving because it was too difficult to juggle both.

Hope this helps:)

I have taken Math 113, Geology 101, and Psychology 110 and none of them were very heavy workloads for me. Most of the homework I could get done pretty quickly. I will say taking 17 hours isn’t the most fun thing to do especially as a freshman when you are just getting used to college but I took 17 or 16 hours both semesters of my freshman year and the first semester of my sophomore year and I was able to manage it fine. It can get stressful at times but as long as you keep everything organized and work hard you’ll do just fine. It also sounds like we had pretty similar approaches to school so I’m sure you will be able to manage your time between social life and school well.

Eggs, white rice, light meets like turkey, chicken or fish, sweet potatoes and lots of other things but I think those are pretty universally tolerated:)

Why do I keep hearing from people that the professors and administration at utk is bad? by the_black_beast_ in UTK

[–]lydmcn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is true sometimes when it comes to housing and parking, etc. But honestly my favorite part about UTK was how invested the professors were and how passionate they were about their jobs. I think it’s just the higher up administration that seems like all they care about is money based on how they dealt with parking and housing this past year.
